BARR Money editor Students returning from spring break a day early to participate in Columbia's fifth annual St. Patrick's Day celebration in Five Points on March 14 won't just be partying. l hey will also be helping various children's organizations, a celebration official said. "All of the money we make for St. Patrick's Day goes to children's charities," said Beth Calvert, St. Patrick's Day public relations spokesperson. "It's not only a fun party," Calvert said, "although we like to think of it as a fund raiser without the 'd.'" Proceeds from the official St. Patrick's Day memorabilia will go to childrens' organizations, Calvert said. t < t ~ ~ i. c i l.UUR UUl IUI IIIC OI Illicit logu ? you'll know that your money is going to a good cause," Calvert said. Last year, the St. Patrick's Day celebration raised and donated about $40,000 to nine children's organizations in Columbia. The organizations included: The South Carolina Chapter of the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation, the Children's Hospital at Richland Memorial Hospital, the Jaycces' Community Hope, U.S. Youth Games, Columbia's I GREEK LIFE WEDNESDAY, MAI MY ROOM, WOMEN'S Ql SrtUAL MUSIC BY CO CHRISTIAN ARTIST I LED BY KEVIN MCAFEE k F COME PARTY WITH ;j>ress* (lard can get you virtually jacket to a leather-bound classic boiiuil for a Ixwkstore or a lieach g college and after, it's the perfect just about anything you'li want Card before graduation. first sign of success And because lit potential, we've made it easier i Kxpress Card right now You can ire you graduate with our special For details, look for applications ist call 1-800 THK-(IAKI), and ask for a student application lie American Kxpress Card 't U'avc School Without It!" Calvert said the St. Patrick's Day celebration actually touches more than these organizations bccause groups such as the Irish Summer Children's Program, the Jaycces and the Shrine will donate their profits to their own chosen organizations. Those groups will have booths to sell items such as soft drinks and food. "You can buy anything ranging from hot dogs to oyster rockafella," Calvert said, adding that Irish sausage dogs and steakon-a-stick are favorites. Individuals as well as groups can open tables and booths. Calvert said many items will be sold. Calvert said they have kept a close watch on sales applications bccausc people take advantage of the opportunity to peddle goods. For example, Calvert said one year someone submitted an application stating hand-made QU/pat/*rc u/nnlH \l/U?r. W.. vM?v?a MVUIU UV JUiU . Last year, officials estimated attendance from 80,000 to 125,000 between the hours of 10 a.m. and 6 p.m. The Department of Parks, Tourism and Recreation cited the celebration as having the largest attendance of a single-day event in South Carolina. Calvert said her job is frightening because, like all large outdoor events, weather could hurt the attendance. , "If it is pouring the Friday ^ before, I will be panicking," Calvert said. The St. Patrick's Day committee plans the celebration on Saturdays so Sundays can be used i ani uajra. "Parking is terrible, of course," Calvert said. Harden Street will be closed at Green and Blossom streets to accommodate the parade and the booths. Calvert advises people who live around Five Points or plan to be in the area the night before to ^ move their cars out of the Harden Street area or tow trucks will move the cars to a "not-so-near" location.
