The quartet had a cassette release in the summer of 1984, but make no mistake about it ? this is a new band. The removal of keyboards and a couple of personnel changes have made the band's sound darker and more rhythmic throughout the album. At the center of this sound is Tom Alewine's guitar work, which is clearly influenced by guitarist The Edge of U2. Alewine slashes through the songs, giving them a strong base to build on. He also uses a ringing guitar sound that, when combined with the solid bass lines of Jay Owen, gives the band a deep, eerie sound. Also at the band's center is vocalist Robin Wilson, who lends a soothing urgency to the songs. As a whole, This Tribal Courthouse is a consistent album with the dark, mystic and sometimes tribal drums of Sony. It's a promising debut for these local artists, but the vinyl does not capture the band at its best, which comes in its live shows. Last Stand, Approved Cuts, One Way Records Last Stand hails from Boston, one of the country's most prolific and best scenes for local music. This Beantown foursome's A driving rock 'n' roll is led by the grinding twin-guitar assault of T. Keenan and Pete Mulford and paced by the drums of Kathy DeMarco. The cuts are consistent from song to song, and many feature overtly political lyrics. r ^ Guaranteed! The sound is fairly clean and crisp, but its main drawback is in the vocal tracks, which tend to be a little too gutteral and monotonous for most tastes. The band has long been a favorite of mine, but has had difficulty in putting their best side on vinyl. Boi-ngo is no exception. The music on Boi-ngo is far from being the band's best. In fact, it's probably the band's worst album. The record is too stiff and mechanical to work. Almost every element, from drums to bass to keyboards, sounds like it's from a computer instead of a musician. With few exceptions, Hoi-ngo is devoid of the frantic energy that has characterized the band and confounded critics. The likely culprit for the lack of energy and depth here is lead vocalist/songwriter Danny Elfman. He is currently hot property in Hollywood, writing music for films and TV shows such as "Back to School" (in which Oingo Boingo appeared), "Fast Times at Ridgemont Hich." Ppp Wpp'c Plnvhnucr> onH an Emilio Estevez movie. With all this lucrative work, it's hard to imagine Elfman putting his best efforts into his work with Oingo Boingo. On the brighter side, the vocals are probably the best of the band's works, which include five albums, an EP, movie songs and an Elfman solo album. His vocals grow stronger and more confident with each record, but the feal difference here are the smoother backing vocals that showcase tighter harmonies. 30 Min in M (our Door In 30 Minutes Your Pizza Custo 1231 > ~ Oi Sup, ENE ST. Gene Hackman plays Norman Dale, an ex-college basketball coach who returns to the sport after 12 years, moving to a tiny Indiana high school in 1951 to turn its team into a winner. The film is full of predictability. You know his aggressive attitude will cost him players and almost his job, but you know he'll gain the respect of everyone. You know he'll clash with a bitter teacher, played by Barbara Hershey, but you know he'll become romantically involved with her. You know he'll sober up a town drunk and basketball fan, played by Dennis Hopper. And you know his team will win the state championship.
