Sign-up is conducted over an eight hour period, and students who have a busy schedule on sign-up day are encouraged to have a friend sign them up. All that it takes is a written note authorizing the person you have chosen to sign you up in your behalf. Make sure that you have given them your completed application/contract, your $100 deposit and a written note stating your present room, where you wish to move and your Social Security number. 5. FLAN, know what your financial resources are going to be and budget them. 2. Don't ASSUME that financial aid or your parents will "cover it". 3. New Developments Engineering students may want to consider the impact of the Swearingen Center on their housing plans. The new engineering building is scheduled ^open <? of 1987. As a result, many of you may have cl.isses in a new location. You may want to think about how convenient your present living quarters are to the new building. Both the Towers and Bales Areas are only two blocks from the new center. Both offer some of the most reasonable rates in Columbia. For 1987-88 the Towers will have received 3 million dollars in improvements. For example, the heating/air conditioning systems are being replaced. In addition, the Tower? Area is one of the most central locations on campus. Bates offers the advantage of an in house cafeteria as well as apmple ?rking. Mfc look forward to the opening of the new fearinj^i Center and encourage you to plan to use its facilities and ours to your best advantage. l-UP FC Apartment Si&n-up-New for 1987-88 In response to concerns expressed last year at sign-up, University has made a major change in the way in which students will sign up for oncampus apartments. Special Days for Apartment Sign-up: The big change is that students wanting to sign up for campus apartments will do so prior to sign-up for regular residence halls. This will allow students to know whether they can secure an apartment, prior to giving up their current room. This change will also give them more time to consider campus alternatives if they do not get into campus apartments. Apartment sign-up will be held on the following days: Same Room Wednesday, March 18; Same buildir.g, different room/apt., Thursday, March 19; and moves between apartments and from other buildings on Friday, March 20. For example, four students who want to sign-up for an apartment in Bates West will be able to do so by coming in on the lowest number between them. Once all empty apartments are full, two roommates will only be able to sign-up on the lowest number between them. Additionally, students wanting to sign-up for an apartment together must be able to fill all rooms, e.g. three students cannot sign up together in an apartment where there are four spaces. This is to allow the maximum number of people to get the roommates of their choice. Upperclass Priority: Priority will be given to students who have completed 60 credit hours of course work. Any space which is not taken by upperclassmen will be available at 3:30pm on Friday of Phase I for rising sophomores (minimun of 30 hrs completed). Housing Rates 1987-88 University Housing does not anticipate any increase in housing rates for the 1987-88 academic year. This will be the third consecutive year without a rate increase. Renovations Beginning two summers ago, University Housing, in conjunction with the Maintenance and Renovations Department, began a major renovation and refurbishment of Carolina's Residence Halls. According to Linda Saad, Director of UHS, Phase III of those renovations will commence this summer. Anticipated in Phase III renovations will be replacement of the heating/air conditioning systems in Snowden, Douglas, and Burney; finishing the painting and waterproofing the exteriors of Thornwell, Maxcy, and Preston; remove asbestos from and refurbish Columbia Hall; replace wiring and hall carpet in Sims; renovate bathrooms in Preston; painting and carpet replacement in D, E, F and G buildings of McBryde; roof replacement on the whole quad and some painting and carpet replacement in other buildings. The renovations are currently in various stages of planning. However, all are anticipated to be complete by opening next fall. Money for the renovations comes from the sale of the Wade Hampton Hotel and a commitment from the University to provide 5% a year from the housing upeicumg uuugei ror renovations (Asbestos removal remains contigent upon funding from the state). The renovation plan itself has been developed through the combined efforts of Uniersity Housing Services, Maintenance and Renovations, and RHA. The Lo To avoid the long waits , lack of sleep and missed classes, University Housing has established a "Signup Numbers" system. All students interested in moving to a different hall or apartment building for the 1987-88 academic your must draw a number between March 1 and April 10. The number drawn will determin when they can sign-up for their new room. Numbers can be drawn at University Housing Services, 1215 Blossom Street. The process is as follows: The numbers drawn from will range from 1 through 100. After each number is drawn, the number will be placed back in the pot. More than one person will draw each number and all will sign up when that number is scheduled (see following schedule). For example, if three people draw number 17 all three come to sign up between 8:30am and 10:30am. Everyone has an equal chance to draw a good number so there will be no advantage in forming a line to draw numbers. A student I.D. will be required to permit an in dividual to draw a number. Individuals must draw their own number - no drawing for another person will be permitted. Each individual will then come to sign up on March 20 (apartments), April 14(Men) or April 18(Women), during the time frame assigned for the Paying tl With the advent of continuing student room sign up, students always have questions about paying their $100 advanced room fee. A check or credit card is probably the easiest way for students to make payment. First, the worry of keeping up with cash is eliminated. Plus a cancelled check provides a convenient record of payment. According to UHS officials, the check should be made to "University of South Carolina" and have the student's social security number written on it. The amount of the check should be for $100 because change cannot be given. Also, third party checks cannot be accepted. These spaces are located in the larger Sims and Preston rooms listed below. This means that at the beginning of the year three students may be assigned to what is normally a two student room. The last person assigned will be a "temporary" resident, and, as space becomes available in other facilities durine the course of th#> fall semester, the resident will be reassigned. If a temporary resident is not given an opportunity to move prior to November 1, a partial rebate of housing fees will be made to all occupants of the room. All residents must complete an official change of address form in person at the University Post Office prior to leaving campus May 16, 1987. Failure to submit a change of address will result in all mail being returned to sender.
