the 1930s and 1940s, a time of war in Europe and
South America. The film combines nice location
shots, a less-than-original story and average performances

character, played by Julie Christie, who arrives in
Buenos Aires to become a governess for two young
girls of a rich and powerful family. The girls,

"Miss Mary" tries 10 show how M.iry's introduction
into a wealthy family's lives alters both theii
world and her initial leelings toward them. At the
same time, it tries to show a deep relationship bet
ween her and each of the children.
The problem with the film is none of the relationships
are developed lulls. and many of the
characters and events are leit in the air.
Ihe girls eventually admire Mary, but it is not
clear why. Christie's character is too weak to convince
viewers she has earned the icspect of jiirls who
ran off six prior governesses.

"Miss Mary" borrows many cinematic touches
from the Btitish film "A Room With a View," such
as lush shots of the family estate and surrounding
countryside. Unlike that film, however, it suffers
from a misguided script, which can be very good at
times. "Miss Mary" attempts lo bring the viewer a
fine story with meaningful characters, but the end
