The Ringling Bros, and Barnum & Bailey circus has presented its magical shows since 1871. The two circuses merged in 1919. The Barnum & Bailey Circus first appeared in Columbia in 1886, and the Ringling Bros, first pitched its tent here 10 years later. The last time the combined circuses played under the canvas big top in the United States was in 1954. The circus did not return to Columbia until 1969 because before the coliseum opened, there was no adequate building to house the three-ring show, Barton said. Ticket prices for the shows are $6, $7.50 and $9.50, with $2 off opening night prices. From staff reports WUSC-FM will be presenting its fifth annual "Moolah for Music" request marathon today and Saturday. "Moolah for Music" is the radio station's main fund-raiser, and this year's goal is to raise $10,(XX) in listener pledges. In addition to raising money I, -1-1 unuiiKii picuges, area mcrcnants have donated prizes such as a portable stereo, car stereo, jewelry, gift certificates and free dinners for the station to give as prizes to encourage listeners to call. The request marathon will kick off at noon today and will run until the end of Valentine's Day Saturday night. "Moolah for Music" began in 1983 for WUSC-FM to increase its limited range, 10-watt capability to a 3000-watt broadcasting range that covers the entire metropolitan area of Columbia. Since that goal was achieved, the marathon has remained an annual event. Although WUSC is funded primarily by the university, outside revenue accounts for about 15 percent of its operating budget. Funds raised during the marathon make up the majority of this revenue. Highlights from last year's marathnn ?A - .lax.uMIUII IllVIUUtU icqucsib ICJ play Madonna's music backwards and the J. With the power increase in 1983, the station moved to 90.5 on the dial, where it is now. Since moving to the FM dial, WUSC has deviated from its progressive rock format. Now calling itself "The Alternative," the station plays a variety of musical styles during the day and concentrates on evening specialty shows. These shows focus on individual types of music, including blues, metal, jazz and punk. Station manager Pat Cox said WUSC's listening audience always comes through because it knows the money is needed to maintain its 24-hour alternative programming format. "If wc close, the listener will suffer." All three of WUSC's phone lines ? 777-7172, 3906 or 4165 ? will be accepting pledge donations during the "Moolah for Music" marathon.
