Hollings seems to get this nagging 1 itch every couple of years, much to the chagrin of the peo- ] pie who would suffer under a draft. So, when Fritz scrat- 1 ches, tens of thousands of young males get the scrape. I Fritz has also had the audacity to call the all-volunteer I army "un-American," and "a glaring civil wrong." ? What's wrong with choosing to live a normal life free of worry about compulsory military service? Nothing at all. But it seems, for some of our "all-American" elected officials, funneling billions upon billions of tax dollars into national defense is not enough. The government wants a few years of your life, too. Students could get deferments under Hollings' proposed )! bill, but only on a short-term basis. High school students would be deferred until they graduate, and college students new llH finich nnf tVi/? c r*m nctAr If* \rr\ 11 oro o r?r\11 enninr VV/UIV4 IIUIOU UUl 111 v OVIUVOIVI It JfUU U1 V/ U OV/111U1 ) they would be gracious enough to let you go ahead and a graduate. Thanks Fritz, that's mighty big of you. It's evident that Fritz deems the military more important than an education. This is downright ridiculous because our greatest threat is not really the supposedly evil, heathen , tide of communism, but rather Japan and other countries, J whose dominance in technology and education are eclips- * ing our own. Fritz needs lo realize what a tremendous upheaval a v peacetime draft would cause. If he had thought really hard v about that, or was in tune with the young men of this coun- e try who would be the victims, he might have kept his E mouth shut. Undoubtedly, he is nostalgic about an era when the peacetime draft was accepted as a part of life, Q "when men were men" and college was a distant dream for j many. f But times change, Fritz. / The peacetime draft is unwanted, and there is no hard s evidence to prove that it really is necessary. People who want to go into the military will go into the military. Fore- J ing people to join the service during peacetime is archaic, j Hopefully, the whole issue will die with a whimper and become history again. Perhaps, though it seems unlikely, 1 Fritz will realize that huge numbers of young men in ? America, who can vote, don't want a peacetime draft. w " . 1 1 j 11 . ! Most of the time I just got updates from a 'achting freak who watched all the races. But did watch one boat race to see if it's possible or a sane, party-loving, red-blooded American boy to watch boat races and remain ;ane. I had to admit to Keith, the boat freak, that t is possible to watch boat races without jouging one's eyes out from sheer boredom, 3ut it's not recommended. I only wish Cosell had been doing the playby-play ? or wind-by-wind ? commentary. I admit, I was one of those who was up in arms when the Cup was stolen by that Aussie three years ago. But I thought more immediate action was required than Dennis Conner's "'I'll get it back in three years, that'll show them' plan." I immediately wrote the president a letter. Dear President (can I call you Ronnie?) Reagan: As you know, Ronnie baby, Australian bandits have been plundering the Hast Coast lately in a funny boat, and they stole the America's Cup. Now, professional yacht racing is such an integral part of both the American heritage and the gross national product, the very cornerstone of our economy, Letters to the Athletes make divers so wearing a life better ,o^k basketbal To the editor: runneth c It's time to stop condemning Thank the poor athletes. So that something must be done to these men and their families. I, for one, am glad draft registration returned in the '80s, because I would be happy and proud to get drafted, trained, mobilized and shipped out to be shot and killed to bring back some silly trinket with some minor sentimental value. It's about time we attacked some dinky little island that hasn't got a prayer of winning. Cuba's got too strong a hold on Caribbean islands like Grenada (Bet you never heard of it, huh?), so let's go after Australia. They've both got beaches, which party-loving American college kids need more of. So c'mon Ronnie, let's restore America to her pride and attack some defenseless countries like we used to do in the old days. editor I can see pretty women have turned the other ilmost nothing jump in- of my heroes, Dr. M; King Jr., turned hi you for the female racism many times, b 1 program ? my lust nothing more than a >ver. took his life. So, all I know is these funny-talking communist-supported Australians have taken OUR cup, and I want it back. Let's get them Ronnie. Just a loyal citizen, Stephen C. Guilfoyle But I've gone to college since I wrote that letter, and have been educated and stuff, so I know better now. The Cup is returned. So what? I don't think of boating as a sport Budweiser should be supporting. Soon, someone will make Miller Lite ads. I can see Dennis Conner coming into the bar now, saying, "These yachting fans, I love'em. Great sails, huh?" Ed Koch says it's OK for them to have a ticker tape parade, with the stupid boat, in New York City. But the New York Giants had to fight to have their ticker tape parade( and football is a real sport. And the Cup has not been restored to where it should be. It really belongs in New York. Will some resident of the Empire State now mount a campaign to "return the Cup to where it belongs?" Or will the Aussies say, "We liked it mate, and we want it back, G'day."? So, the America's Cup is back.
