The Columbia Vet Center, located at 1313 Elmwood Ave., opened in July 1985 as part of the federal government's Vietnam Veterans Outreach Program. The staff has since helped a large number ^ of local veterans, said Clyde Myers Jr., readjustment counseling specialist for the center. "at Cleveland State University ? Dr. John Wilson." Wilson's research paper, The Forgotten Warrior, was submitted to the VA and Congress in 1979. Its impact led to the program's creation, which was extended and expanded in 1981 and 1984. There are currently 189 veterans centers in the ^ United States. A Greenville center opened in November 1981 to serve veterans in the Upstate and Piedmont areas. "In 1981, Congress unanimously approved of our program and gave us an extension until 1984. Then we had another expansion of the Vets Center program, starting in 1985. As a result, we came about in that third phase," Myers said. The center is required by the government to see 20 new veteran clients per month, he said. "Normally, we have been very successful at meeting that productivity standard ever since 1985. Some days you have a lot of veterans, some days you don't." Myers said most of the center's veterans come in on their own, while others are referred by the government's department of social services, local social service agency's or the VA. The center sees ' /anywhere from nine to 20 veterans on a daily basis and deals with other clients by telephone, mail or newsletter he said. v j ' i' / J** The programs offered by the center include counseling on an individual, group, family or marital basis. The three-member staff also sets up Agent Orange exams at the Columbia VA medical center and provides assistance in upgrading discharge papers, finding employment or receiving veterans' benefits, Myers said. ~~ American, A # d For fans of live music, th< |H f O |*1 coming months should offer a lo ^ * of activities. "Many veterans and people come up to us then and want to know what we're all about and where we're at." Myers said the Columbia center, as well as other centers across the United States, have had to deal with public assumptions and stereotypes about veterans. "There was a misconception when this program first started in 1979 that vets centers were going t6 be crowded with vets coming in with drug and alcohol problems. That has not been proven to be true. "We help them out, then we may not ever see them again because that's their way of life. "For a small staff, we've seen a large number of vets since we've been here, and I think that speaks very well for the program itself.
