Ml I Laundromat to give clean food and fun A NEW concept in laundering clothes will be available for Carolina students next semester. Soaps, a national franchise, will be opening a laun dromat on the corner of Whaley and Assembly streets that will include a cafe, cable television, tanning beds and video games. The cafe will serve pizza, nachos, beer and wine, said Smith Bucham, who owns exclusive rights to all future laundromats in South Carolina. The Buchams got the idea for a leisurely laundromat near USC when they were travelling in Raleigh N.C. and saw a Soaps laundromat. "PEOPLE HAVE always had to do their laundry. We want to make a place a little more comfortable to do what is considered a dirty job," Bucham said. Soaps will offer its customers two 25-inch televisions with cable, a jukebox, four tanning beds, video games, and a cafe. It will also include over 50 washers and 30 dryers. The laundromat will be open seven days a week from the hours of 8 a.m. to 11 p.m. THE LAUNDROMAT will try to reach young professionals in the area and college students. Miss Bucham said that the Soaps they saw near Chapel Hill offered specials such as athletic night when the athletes could get discounts. She said they will probably offer similar specials designed for fraternities and sororities. SOAPS MAIN office is located in Jacksonville, Fla. and it has franchises from Florida to Massachusetts. Bucham plans to open at least six more Soaps in South Carolina. He said that he has thought about cities such as Charleston, Greenville, Spartanburg and Myrtle Beach for future locations. The Columbia location will open on Dec. 15. "I THINK it's going to do great. The college students going away for a month will give us a chance to get all of the kinks out," said Miss Bucham. Minors will be able to patronize Soaps although beer and wine will be served in the cafe, Bucham said. I.D.'s will be checked for those customers wishing to purchase these items.
