After four close games in which USC's football team should have won, and feeling the sting of being known as "the best 3-6-1 team in the nation," the Gamecocks had a chance to redeem themselves Saturday against Gator Howl-bound, 19-ranked Clcmson. But Carolina let it come down to the last chance ? a 41-yard field goal attempt by USC's most consistent kicker, Scott Hagler. His miscue with 25 seconds left cost the Gamecocks yet another last-second victory. The rivals tied, 21-21, and left faj.s and players alike feeling emntv nftrr what w?c cimnncnrl -y to be the biggest state-wide party of the year. What a waste of an otherwise beautiful day for football. No bragging rights, no victory celebrations, no overtime ? not even a few good fights after the Jfe game. In fact, there seemed to be a moment of stunned silence as time expired, as if no one could believe the game was over. "It was just sort of a froze-up stadium," said Tiger coach Dan ny Ford after the game "Everybody just sat there anc looKca around ana aian t Knov whether to jump up and holler 01 start crying."
