USC second 3 make al!-cc By JEFF SHREWSBURY Sports editor USC's top three cross country nunners were voted to the allconference team at Saturday's Metro Conference cross country meet. Tom Howe, Rob Devlin and Ken Costello all finished within 10 seconds of each other and in the top 10 places at the rainsoaked, five-mile race. The Gamecocks' team finished in second place in the conference with 57 points, 18 points behind 16th-ranked Virginia Tech. I Howe, USC's top finisher, ?C * U 11 ? ! * L. .Ar pinucu luuim uvcian wiin : VPI's Jeff Taylor won the event ' with a time of 24:46. Taylor was the winner of the Carolina Invita- t i tional at Fort Jackson two weeks r W ago. "Virginia Tech just outclassed . us a bit," Howe said. "We were closer than they ever expected us < to be." But, he added, "18 points is not that much for a cross country meet, its only a couple of places." Rounding out USC's top five, Devlin finished fifth, Costello 0 placed seventh, Andy Foster ended 15th and John Bahura was 26th. "I'm pretty pleased with my effort and the way that I ran Saturday," Howe said. "We ran n D L^Uliai^ L> . VMM I JMffer | ! "I don't think the injury was bothering him," Strong said. "It's kept him from running consistent, but 1 expect him to do well next week at the rcgionals." USC will travel to Furman for the Southern regional meet, this weekend. The southern region has 73 teams eliaible to comnete. but Strong said he thinks only about 45 will be there. The southern region is often called the toughest region in the nation, according to both Strong and Howe, containing six of the top 20 teams. Qualifying for nationals would be quite an accomplishment, Strong said. Only the top three teams and top five individuals will qualify at the regional meet for the nationals, Nov. 24 at the University of Arizona. "Given a few breaks and you can't tell what might happen at region," Strong said. t t - lOOQ. # THE GAIN Russell House Men's Singles Registration Tournament B Entrance ] Sponsored by I) 6 SALE w m new releases by: I?
