* Former SOLC mi I feci it necessary to answer allegations in the editorial of the Oct. 8 Gamecock ("Improved?") concerning the disbanding of the Student Organization Licensing Commission. Some of the statements in the editorial arc not founded on facts but on rhetoric and could very well lead to misunderstandings on the students' part as to the purpose behind PL(86)027. I anticipated this response on the part of ^ some students who might think that Student Government has sold out once again to the administration and taken away the students' power. This is not so. Though it cannot be argued that the hill had the administration's backing, it also had the backing of the Executive Committee and Student Senate. The statement, "the decision of which groups should be on campus is now being decided solely by administrators" is false. The decision of which groups to allow on campus has been taken out of the hands of the i! administration by the courts. The federal an^discrimination clause covers all aspects of ^ the university, including student I organizations. ' This precedent was set by the court case -a!? i? ] nrougnt againsi mc aumimsirauun uy mc vjay Student Association in 1983. In making the decision of which organizations to allow on campus, the students have no more choice than the administration. We on SOLC were reminded several times of the fact that, by law, no organization may be denied a license if all requirements are met. v v1 Monda ^ 7:01 3jj& h\ Russell ijjflFl j I A hair to be pr r am u? mm p< ? First, the SOLC was composed entirely of students. There was no administration official at the meetings. Second, the members were interested and committed enough to apply for and serve on the committee. Members of the committee will tell you just how committed they were when meetings ran for three hours. Implying that SOLC members were not "upstanding" is unwarranted and false. The senators and student volunteers who served on SOLC do not deserve this treatment from The Gamecock and deserve an apology. The removal of any direct association with the university is not an effort to encouragc "responsible" groups but is a move to provide the university with protection from being named in a legal case. Further, this action was in no way intended to imply that groups arc irresponsible or not "commendable" in their behavior. The new policy docs not remove all association with the university, onlv forbids usage of the university's name or initials in the name of the group. Already last spring all groups were asked to remove the uiversity's name from bank accounts. This was not an administration move but an order from the State Treasurer's office. Finally, the main reason for implementing the Student Organization Registration System was simplicity. No organization can be denied a license without threat of a lawsuit. No organization ever came before SOLC without first meeting all the requirements set by the univcisty. The office of Student Affairs did all the work, and will continue to do so. All PL(8^)027 did was legitimize the present system and remove some of the red tape involved. As such it did not diminish student power in the least. If tuition continues to increase, that's the price we have to pay for rnsiirinp that riponlc from Bocota to Bangkok do not continue to confuse the real USC with Southern Cal. And a 14 percent increase is a small one at that. The Greenville News says Holderman is pompous and arrogant.
