"Everyone is just looking for the easy way out, that's where these fad drugs come from," said k Dr. Henley Hurt of Columbia, i. "The only way to really lose t weight is to cut your caloric in, take and increase your exercise program." But that doesn't stop the claim gUl to do otherwise. "Our products will actually make you healthier," said Evelyn Bailey, a distributor of Shakley's products. "But the best thing is that you keep the weight off." Herbal Life distributor Rosa Lambart guarantees a loss of 15 to 20 pounds in about three weeks. She was almost 6-feet tall, but felt she should weigh the same as her friends. Now the 30-year-old woman sits in a hospital room, still trying to overcome her illness ? anorexia nervosa ? which caused her to drop from 138 Hnwn to 98 nonnds. A She constantly planned how . to avoid meals and thought of ways she could make others think she was eating more than she actually was. "I wouldn't go to a lot of social things if they were eating," she said. If she ate something she thought she shouldn't have, she would make herself vomit. Though she was always con scious of her problem, it took Iffcr almost twelve years to realize it was something she couldn't control on her own. They're too far fetched in their guaranteed results." One can't stay on one of these diet plans forever. Most of these weight loss products caution not to use the product for a prolonged period of time. "That should be a warning of quackery," said Holly Knight, a nurse at USC's Thomas Moore Medical Clinic. "If you can't follow it for more than 30 days, rent too far me about my weight, but most people wouldn't say anything. "It fell good not to eat, a high feeling," she said. She said anorexics often feel that their bodies are different, so they don't need as much food as everyone else. "You think your metabolism is faster than everybody else's." One thing that helped her was a picture a nurse took ot her. "l couldn't beleive I was that thin," she said. "I could see it a lot better than if I looked in the mirror." The woman said she was treated at Duke University for six weeks, but later had a relapse. "I thought it was over, that 1 wouldn't nave any more problems," she said. "I felt like I could go back to eating like I did before and not lose the weight. "Now I know I can't skip a meal, I can't just eat a salad. I've got to do certain things just like a diabetic has to do to keep their health up."
