Sports Wednesday, June 11, 1986 ^ USC take All-Sports From staff reports USC edged out Metro Conference rival Florida State to win the league's All-Sports Award for the second consecutive year, conference commissioner Steven Hatchell recently announced. With Metro championships in men's and women's swimming, men's and women's tennis, and ^ women's basketball, the V Gamecocks compiled 63 all-sport i points to hold off FSU, which finished with 61. The Seminoles have won the award six times and finished second behind Carolina last year. USC finished second to the Seminoles in its debut Metro season in 1983. "This was the most com pciinvc race ior mc All-sports Award sincc its inception ten years ago," Hatchell said. "With many of our schools having nationally-ranked programs in 1985-86, it was a great accomplishment for South Carolina to win this award." Points in the annual competition are awarded based on performance in 12 championship events. In addition to its five titles, USC finished second in women's volleyball, baseball and men's golf. Florida State won championships in women's volleyball, baseball, track and men's golf and also finished second in three sports. Virginia Tech, the early leader in the all-sports race, took titles in men's and women's cross country, while Louisville won the men's basketball championship. "The All-Sports Award has become the goal of all seven of our contcrence members, so I know that South Carolina athletic director Bob Marcum accepts this award with great pride," Hatchell said. Marcum agreed, and credited the award to the winning attitude of Gamecock athletes. "I think winning this award is a tribute to our athletes and coaches ? they really want to win the All-Sports trophy because it reflects so well on their athletic department," Marcum said. "I think the award represents a balanced program. It shows we re puiung an me resources we can into our department to bring the university a winning athletic program."
