But Holderman was out of town on a two-day meeting when his office received the letter Thursday. However, he gave the alliance a written reply Friday, saying the university already has taken a clear stance. "Although the university and the foundation which serves it have no direct investments in South Africa, both the Chairman and 1 believe along with the substantial majority of American colleges and universities that total divestment serves no constructive purpose either for South Africans or Americans," Holdcrman said. Last fall the foundation decided to invest only in companies that had signed the Sullivan Principles, which promise equal opportunity for blacks. The alliance called that decision a "self-serving slight-ofhand," saying the Sullivan Principles don't work. Jim McMahon, director of Residential Student Development, said this week has been declared National Suicide Prevention Week. The purpose is to focus on the suicidal feelings of students brought about by end-of-semester pressures. "This week the university will try to inform students of thp various resources they can take advantage of if they have suicidal feelings. "Many of the students will be under tremendous pressure for the next week or so. They may find it helpful to know where to go for assistance," said McMahon, who is also chairman IGranger-0\ faculty> stuch 3nd pa <?taw A 1307 Maij ' m ri R 5 TT i -rl sPfc 1256-0 I FAST - FREE i Serving USC, Shane W IIHHIIIIHHiMail I I II & tq nut 11 $2.00 01 11 Any Lara 1 j Pizza i NO EXPIRATIO 1 I 1 i mmwmmmmm wm i s can learn at m-time blues; of the Suicide Focus Week at use. Suicide Prevention Week will focus on university policies that relate to suicide among students and educational efforts to inform students and faculty about actions they can take if they or someone they know feels suicidal, he said. "It is important that students know where to go for help. Students can see the university psychiatrist or visit the Counseling and Human Development Center. Both services arc free of charge," McMahon said. Other places students can visit include the University Suicide Center and Psychological Services Center. Students can also talk ctnff mrmhprc nf tlioir rcsidcncc halls. The Open Door program is another possibility, McMahon said. Many people will give clues that they ? feel suicidal before actually attempting to commit suicide," he said. "People need to watch for things people say that will indicate that they are very upset. Statements such as, 'I don't care about my exams because I'm not going to be around here much longer,' should be taken seriously by other people and help should be sought immediately." Although many USC students don't feel suicidal, many are under excessive pressure because of end-of-semester activities. Many students are faced with failing grades, no money, unpaid bills and graduation pressures, on top of final exams. "Students should try to keep a calm head," McMahon said. "If you feel you need help, by all means seek it. It could save your life." II - w thank all ieir support 5-1986 o um g# : 252-6714 ?J I > PEPSI'S I 1 300 I * 11 s. si rii u 0 Kj| 00 OFF !H ?
