They did. The championship also was supposed to be fiercely contested. Again, there were no surprises. ^ Behind sophomore Margaret O'Grady's dramatic 3-6, 6-2, 6-2 win, the Lady Gamecocks squeezed out a 5-4 win against the Lady Scminolcs to retain their Metro Conference title. USC head coach Arlo Elkins said before the match his team would have to "have good singles performances to do what we have to do." O'Grady, Rita Winebarger and a Lisa Winsor provided just that. w vvinebarger and Winsor posted 6-2, 6-0, 6-4, 6-4 wins, respectively. O'Grady struggled early, and after losing the first set 3-6 to FSU senior Jenny Cerino, she recovered to take the next two sets and the victory. The win put USC ahead in the match 3-2, but the Lady Seminoles fought back. FSU senior Claudia Gaughf _ started with a 6-4 first-set win 9 against USC's Diane Commons. The singles were over, and the score was tied at three. USC, which reached the finals of the tournament by disposing of Louisville and Cincinnati by 9-0 scores, needed two doubles victories to retain its title. Once again, the Lady Gamecocks responded. After the Lady Seminoles won ?i. - - me urst aouDlcs match, USC tied the score at five with Winsor and Winebarger's 6-3, 6-4 victory against Kim Temples and Christine Wood. Then it was up to Jill Hausler and Ashley Thomason to put away FSU's Cerino and Kirsten Turk for the title. Hausler and Thomason won the duel in straight sets, 6-4, 7-5. "I think the turning point was when Margaret O'Grady was able to come back after losing the first set," said Elkins, whose team finished the season 13-13. ? i I f - r ncr pcriormancc was really a gutsy effort. Junior Brian Barker, freshman Johan Karlen, junior Dave Delsini and sophomore Harry Sy won their respective singles championships, with Karlen, Delsini and Sy winning in straight sets. In doubles action, SandbergAshby, Delsini-Barker and Sy with freshman Steve Longley had tougher matches, but still won titles. Sandberg, a second-place finisher in No. I singles and doubles last year, took revenge Dy beating the same players he lost to in 1985 for this year's titles. "Jan had no (unforced) errors in the first set, which is something I don't think I've ever seen before," DeMars said, referring to Sandberg's nearly flawless 6-0, 6-2 singles title match. Florida State, last year's runner-up, lost its top three singles seeds to graduation and slipped to fourth place. DeMars said upstart Louisville, this year's third place team, surprised him when the Cardinals gave USC strong competition. "Even though we beat them, they did a lot better than anticipated," he said.
