Viewpoint 4 * Friday, April 18, 1986 Unity White and blai together to so Black and white fraternities and sororities at USC are entering a new era o f understanding and cooperation with the imminent merger of their governing bodies, and the people who are coordinating the merger are to be commended for their longoverdue action. But the success or failure of the merger rests upon the shoulders of USC's greeks themselves, and like all change, such success is to be found in compromise and communication. Twenty-five years ago white greeks started the annual Greek Week festivities, while black fraternities and sororities started a separate greek week ten years later. This year marks the first time black and white greeks have celebrated the event together. The black fraternity Alpha Phi Alpha is rushing a white pledge, another indication that USC greeks are giving some Keeping kids out of USC: > I B suareu siupm Editor's note: This is the only part of a story describing this writer's participation in the PreGraduation Intervention Program at (JSC. They were in Prc-Graduation Intervention, a program that helps high school students stay out of college. The kids walked across Sufnter Street to the gate of The Horseshoe, where a guard frisked them and checked their vaccination records. In an upper window of the Pa/Mllltl u .. - I.. - -! i u\-uiij in;uu, cl ^lUltiy UIU gentleman lowered his binoculars and turned to his companion. "Fresh meat comin' in," he said. Waiting beneath the trees, some of the kids told jokes. Others told stories. And then eight or nine huge college students crashed through the shrubbery, looking ready to kill. "Yo, up against the wall," yelled the first one. 44Ciet your $%&!! movin'." "There isn't any wall," one of the kids said. The gang leader looked perplexed. But more needs to he dnnp Until white fraternities begin rushing black pledges, a more completely integrated system remains an unrealistic notion. A few positive first steps have been taken. However, total unity between black and white greeks is still a long way off. What's needed are more cooperative projects between black and white groups, like the Delta Delta Delta / Kappa Alpha Psi Pedal-a-thon for the Ronald McDonald House. Recent joint projects have shown that black and white groups remain seperate as seen in the individual displays set up on opposite sides of the Russell House patio Monday. But even so, black and white greeks have shown maturity in their spirit of cooperation, and hopefully will keep up the good work. mh jii f/ijKk I JM HH v?";'.fjk ^iv| itffHHHS^SB^^^IBBBBHBH^ -uJSBfi Andy Duncan geology exam. Mr. Taylor, I si reread your Editor's Page, then co Guest edil Obscenity la Society creates laws and restrictions on the behavior of its people and its institutions in order to run smoothly and prevent unfair treatment. The lack thereof would mean chaos. However, a law repressing a behavior which neither interferes with society's functioning not hurts anyone would contradict its very justification, and its implementation would be a total waste of effort. Because one's freedom to swing his arm stops where another's nose begins, people should mind their own business and not try to make laws out of the restrictions of their belief system when the behavior they want to forbid in others is known not to hurt others physically, materially or pecuniarily. This is a pluralistic society, and no segment of society, regardless of how powerful or numerous it be, should impose its own peculiar restrictions onto the rest of society. Since feelings are irrational, laws established on u uums wouiu nc inconercni. Potentially, anything could be made illegal and society would regress. That is why due to the emotional nature of so-called obscenity, there can be and is no agreement over what it is or is not, and thereby even less rationale for its restriction. At best, obscenity is in the mind of the beholder. Cross-cultural examinations indicate beyond gainsay that there is nothing intrinsically wrong with nudity.
