Fire trucks respond to AQII inioc bail By PATRICK JEAN Assistant Spotlight editor A false telephone report of a fire brought Columbia lire trucks racing to Bates West dorm. Someone with a male-sounding voice called the Columbia Fire Department at 9:08 p.m. Friday reporting a fire at the dorm, according to shift commander I rt.iic W/iIKo L/vui.i tv uiiaiii.i. As students watched, two lire trucks, a hook-and-ladder unit and four university police vehicles arrived at Bates West. Firemen began a floor-by-floor check for smoke or flames about 9:10 p.m. Firemen remained on the scene for about 15 minutes, but found nothing. No alarms went off or were pulled inside the building, according to Tamara Smoot, a desk attendant at Bates dorm. "A control panel in each dorm would go off in the event of fire. That didn't happen at either Bates or Bates West," she said. Williams said the incident was a deliberate, malicious false alarm. "Usually alarm boxes will be pulled or go off inside the buildings. But this was a false report by telephone, so this was quite unusual and quite malicious." On March 3, fire trucks responded to a false alarm at the dorm. A water leak in the basement accidentally triggered equipment that alerts the city of fires. No alarms went off in the residence hall at that time either. University police officials declined to comment until a report on the matter is completed. The Bates Area manager's office could not be reached for lUIIIIIICIll. Williams said the fire department will not be investigating the telephone hoax. THERI BECOMING on the ri^'ht mean* earning a BSN. \vr Clifton, N| 07015. ARMYNURS | ' ' f'U'* ' ' ! Wssnm.
