The announcement came less than a week after the Gamecocks ended their season with a 12-16 mark after losing to Memphis State 100-59 in the first round of the Metro Conference tournament, the largest margin of defeat in the tournament's hictnrv I t enaenn vi'itl* s'traight defeats, the longest losing streak since the 1964-65 Gamecocks dropped eight in a row. Foster met with Athletic Director Hob Marcum at II a.m. Monday, March 10, to discuss the basketball program. At Mareum's request, Foster resigned the next day at 1:30 p.m. Foster had two years remaining on his contract, but the university reached an agreement with him whereby he will be paid $120,830 each of the next two years. Foster's salary was $70,830. The remaining $50,(KM) is reportedly a settlement for various camps and clinics l oster conducted during the off-season. Foster's assistants ? Rick Duckctt, Dick Stewart and Ray Jones ? will remain 011 salary until their contracts expire June 30 of this year. In last Tuesday's press conference, Marcum made it clear that he would conduct the search for Foster's successor. Marcum indicated that he was interested in looking at several coaches whose teams arc participating in the National Collegiate Athletic Association Tournament and the National Invitational Tournament. Old Dominion head coach Tom Young appears to be at the ton of Marcum's list, accordi 11 u to several published reports. Old Dominion defeated West Virginia 72-64 in the first round, but was eliminated 89-61 by top-ranked Duke in the second round. Young, however, has declined comment repeatedly when asked if he was interested in USC's vacancy. Other top candidates for the job include Ohio University head coach Danny Nee and Navy head coach Paul Evans. Nee led his squad to a 22-7 record, while Evans guided the Midshipmen to a 27-4 record and a spot in this weekend's semifinals of the NCAA's East Regional. Other coaches rumored to be interested in the job are former USC and Milwaukee Bucks star Brian Winters, currently an assistant coach at Princeton, and Indiana Pacers assistant coach Uonme Walsh, who was formerly an assistant at USC under Frank McGuire. Virginia Tech head coach Charlie Moir and Bradley head coach Dick Versace have also expressed an interest in the position. Georgia Tech head coach Bobby Crcmins, another Gamecock star during the McGuire era, has taken himself out of the running for the position. Crcmins renortedlv turned down an nffrr of f\ to 3 million for four years to return to his alma mater, according to The Atlanta Constitution. Foster came to USC in March of 1980 after previous head coaching stops at Bloomsburg State, Rutgers, Utah and Duke. He compiled a 92-79 record in his six seasons at USC, and his overall coaching record in 26 seasons is 413-268. Foster is the only coach in NCAA history to lead four different schools to 20 or more victories, and his 1977-78 Duke squad reached the finals of the NCAA Tournament before losing to Kentucky. Foster's best USC squad was the 1982-83 team, which posted a 22-9 record and reached the quarterfinals of the NIT.
