Women's gi ranked 23rt By JOHN BOYETTE Sports editor If its fall results arc any indication of the women's golf team's | capabilities, then the 1986 spring campaign may be the best in the history of USC's program. "This team's probably the best I've had," Noonan said. "I've got five golfers who arc capable of shooting 75 or better." That talent was shown earlier this year when USC finished ninth in the Guadalajara Invitational against tough competition. ) Last fall the Lady Gamecocks posted a second-place finish in the Memphis Women's Intercollegiate and a ninth-place showing in the Lady Seminole Golf Invitational. In the Lady Seminole tournament, USC scored below 300 as a team for the first time ever. No, Liebler didn't inherit a team loaded with seniors or AllAmerica candidates. But he does have a squad that is experienced, although young, and facilities that are among the best in the country. "We're real young as far as age goes," Liebler said. "But we have a lot of experience agewise." There are no seniors on the squad. According to Liebler, a former All-Ameriean at IJSC in 1980-81, the top two golfers will be Jeff Hull, a sophomore from San Diego, and Matt McCarley, a junior from Camden. Those two, along with Robbie Hrubala, Brian Lenhard, and Bruce Bulina, will represent USC this weekend when they compete in the Gamecocks' first tournament of 19 8 6, the Florida Southern/Imperial Lakes Invitational in Lakeland, Ma. women's te tch past ach other six memlx equally well, n's and women's Lady Gameco think this year's team is also bet Ig pace. ctnrf ccording to both "We have ba have come back plus Magdclcna ast year's marks. we should be sti iped out to a 10th The women ar record. "It's my job to make sure that tlicv know it's not a sin to go out and make a mistake on the golf course." 1 iebler is also blessed with outstanding facilities and a supportive athletic department. The Gamecocks have three local courses ? Spring Valley, Wildcwood, and The Woodlands ? available for their use, in addition to practice greens and a dri\ing range located behind the Roost. Plans for a golf course at Bell Camp, which is to be designed by Jack Nicklaus' company, are in the developmental stages.
