Budget cut leads By FRED STEPPE Staff writer USC's Writers Series has been discontinued because of a lack of funds, said the dean of the College of Humanities and Social Sciences. The series was designed to bring authors from around the world to speak at USC. Chester Bain, dean of the College of Humanities and Social Sciences, was in charge of the money allocated to the project. Bain said financial support for the series came from money left over in USC accounts. This normally occurs when a faculty member either takes an unpaid leave of absence or is unable to fill a needed position for a semester. (tn - ** ' occausc 01 mc iwo percent budget cut," Bain said, "we simply do not have the funds." The series, started in 1979, included five or six A writers a year and was able to attract authors Erica Jong, Tom Wolfe, Kurt Vonnegut, Richard Wilbur, Seamus Heany, Toni Morrison and Nobel Prize winners Czeslaw Milosz and I.D. Singer. FUT TA The people of Northern Telecom are reshaping communications. Dissolving the barriers among voice, data and image. The series had good support from students, faculty and the communitv. he said Geckle said the series might return to USC. "Hopefully, with funds, we'll have it back by spring, 1987." Geckle said he thinks people are definitely disappointed because of the loss of the project. "I'm disappointed and I wish they could do away with something else instead of cutting the program," said Steve Byars, biology sophomore. "I love to read, and I'm going to miss the opportunity to see some of my favorite authors in person," said Chip Chewning, history junior. "1 like to go there and listen to the writers and I'm disappointed that they're not coming here anymore," said Alok Patel, biology sophomore.
