Gardner attributes the increased interest in the freshman experience to several factors, |7cii i iv 11 lei I I y lilt IUIIIH.IUU3 lldlllMUtl I epulis citing problems with the undergraduate education offered in the nation's colleges and universities and the financial stake these institutions have in freshmen. Forty percent of the freshmen who entered the nation's colleges and universities last fall will never graduate, he said. "All levels of the institution must be involved in making the college experience satisfying and productive for students. Otherwise, the freshman dropout rate will continue to climb with disastrous results," Gardner said. "The number of eligible students has been decreasing and will continue to do so. Even by the year 2000, there will not be as many traditional age high school graduates as there were in 1981. "This conference will bring together in one r"\ 1 o nil w-v* r r? i % r\r\ % I am!
