Students for the Education of
Ethnic Diversity (SEED) will
soon offer workshops to
heighten racial and cultural
awareness on campus, said
Ralph Johnson, assistant dean
for minority student affairs.
"We hope to increase the appreciation,
or at least acceptance,
of cultural diversity,"
Johnson said.
"When I was hired in August
1985, I was told one of my
responsibilities would be to
desensitize the university to
racial and cultural diversity,"
said Johnson, also co-sponsor of
the program.
"We wanted some tangible
results from Leadership for
Life week," said Debbie Ritter,
leadership and health enrichment
coordinator.
The concensus of the leadership
program was the need for
"more open conversation about
the different racial and cultural
groups," Ritter said.
Newly arrived at USC,
Johnson needed to be
"educated," to the racial issues
of the campus.
"I made the suggestion we
establish a group of students
who would help us identify the
racial problems at USC and

Both offices discussed the
possibilities of forming such a
group. A pilot group of
students was later formed.
According to Johnson, the
students first conducted excercises
to become aware of their
own feelings as they related to
racial and cultural issues.
The group soon established
its name and began training for
cultural workshops. Such
workshops have been conducted
across campus by
Johnson.
"We are ready to see our first
cadre of students to facilitate
racial and cultural workshops,"
Johnson said.
Workshops will cater to
residence hall programs, greek
programs or any group who requests
them.
