Smithsoniai to save hist A campaign to save more than 800,000 feet of historic aviation newsreel footage from the 1920s has been launched by the Smithsonian's National Air and Space Museum and USC. in an open letter made public at the end of last month, Museum Director Walter Boyne and USC Pesident James Holderman called on the aerospace industry as well as the motion picture and broadcast community to help preserve the rapidly deteriorating nitrate-based film. "Our efforts to save the aviation newsreel footage is but one small step," Boyne said. "We hope our actions will inspire others to come forward to save the rest of this rich and irreplaceable national treasure." Much of the footage is undu plicated anywhere. The 35mm film is highly volatile and is subject to deterioration. Once the aviation footage is transferred to a safer, less volatile film, museum officials plan to incorporate the footage into exhibits and will make a videotape version available to the public. One version will be available at USC. Fox News was started in 1919 by providing theatergoers with a brief pictorial news summary. By 1922, the company boasted 1,008 cameramen staioned worldwide. Production centers were established in London, Paris, Munich and Sydney. Twice a week until late 1963, newsreels of about 10 minutes in length were produced and distributed. The outtakes were placed in cans and stored in vaults. From 1919 to 1927, Fox News footage was silent. In May 1927, Fox News unveiled its Movietone optical sound system and changed its name from Fox Film Company to Fox Movietone News with Lindbergh's recordbreaking New York-to-Paris flight as its first newsreel. News clippings, programs and press released were included as part of the report. The "dope sheets" also will be available for researchers. Each piece of film footage was assigned a number and a thorough, cross-referenced cataloging system and patterned after the Dewey decimal system commonly found in libraries was instituted. An index card describing the film's content was prepared and then cross-filed topically, biographically and geographically. After the paperwork was com pletcd, the film clips were packed in metal film cans, labeled and stored. Before being transferred to USC, the "silent years" nitrate film was stored in caves in rural New Jersey, where it was virtually inaccessible.
