SlSSn,."'.1!S ??? gmmcock 9 pliff talk ' Gregg Lasky Berson didn't take long to earn USC respect In the fall of 1977, Mark Berson came to USC from The Citadel to start the school's first intercollegiate soccer program. You see, soccer was not an intercollcgiate sport , when he arrived ? it had been a club sport at USC for years. So he not only had to earn enough respect from the team's on-the-field performance to get some quality teams on his schedule, but he also hoped to generate some fan support. inai s me ^.aicn-zz quamy 01 college sports ? you can't gain any acceptance unless you've beaten some top-rate teams, and you can't get toprate teams on your schedule unless you've already gained some acceptance. Well, Berson and assistant coach Trevor Adair have definitely accomplished that feat. They've ac| tually surpassed it, having taken the Gamecocks to the quarterfinals of the National Collegiate Athletic Association playoffs this season. Their most impressive accomplishment is that it took them so little time. USC's season ended Sunday when it lost to American University 2-0 at The Graveyard. Sure, it was a disappointment ? fans, and perhaps players, were beginning to think about a national champion ship. But the loss came against a great team that capitalized on two USC miscues. Otherwise, it was an evenly played match. Berson handled the loss with composure, unlike | Clemson coach I.M. Ibrahim, who had nothing good to say about anyone but himself after the Gamecocks defeated the Tigers two weeks ago. "We achieved our goals this year," Berson said. we re very pleased to have made the NCAA tournament. It's very gratifying. A lot of really good teams didn't make the NCAA's this year. "I'm very proud of this team ? they fought hard all year. There wasn't a lot made out of it, but we played with a lot of injuries this season, and we had to make some adjustments. It's just an indication of ) the character this team has." 3 J JVo s I ^7. si | fL U Li \ <zNec Ml * The Gol O m m .. m. <p II n Barton shouts instructions durina Sunday's nlavnff I Berson and Adair have 21 of 24 players returning ~ next year from this season's 20-3-1 team, losing goalie Warren Lipka, midfielder Glenn Witt and forward Dan Goggins. Lipka will be one of the two starting goalies in the Senior Bowl, an all-star game to be played Dec. 20 in Orlando, Fla., and is a candidate for National Goalkeeper of the Year and AllAmerica honors. Sophomore Marty Baltzegar, the anchor of the Gamecock defense, reflected on the team after the loss to American. "It was a lot of hard work from the first practice Aug. 12. We had three goals ? our first was to make the playoffs, the second was to ucai ^icmson ana me ultimate goal was to win the national championship." They didn't get their national championship this season, but with a strong nucleus returning next season, maybe Berson and Adair can go a few steps further.
