Students note: no .vaccination, no registration By JULIET NADER AxtiUtllll n#?we pflilnr Students will not be able to register for classes this spring if they have not been vaccinated against measles and rubella, but Thomson Student Health Center will help them meet this requirement. In order to register, part-time and full-time students born after 1956 must have proof of vaccination either through the health center or from valid records. Students who have already had their shots arc on a computer list. which will allow them to sign up for classes. Students can be vaccinated at the health center through Dec. 6, p\ at Carolina Coliseum during prcregistration Dec. 9-13 and during regular registration Jan. 14-17. At the present, 6,000 students have not met the requirement. The shots arc necessary because today's college students have fallen behind in their immunizations, according to Bob Cargile, the health center's business manager. "The disease was almost ^ eradicated when these students W were young because people developed a natural immunity," he said. Because of this, children of that time did not receive shots, Cargile said The vaccination booth will be "one of the first things students sec at registration," he said. "We were the first university in the state to implement this re quircmcnt," uargnc said. "Most ? other schools arc doing it now." He said measles and rubella shots arc a requirement, and students will not be able to register without them. "Nobody has an excuse," Cargile said. "We notified the students at least five times." He said they sent a letter informing students of the new policy last June, had an article in The Gamecock, sent three more letIP ters this year and put a reminder on the registration appointment slip of those who need shots.
