The Gamecocks will travel to Clemson Sunday to play the Tigers, who defeated N.C. State 5-2 in another first-round match. Despite being outshot 11-4 by Duke in the first half, the Gamecocks made good on their opportunities for two goals in the first 30 minutes of the match. After weathering some ^ dangerous Blue Devil attacks in the opening minutes, including a furious scramble in front of the Gamecock goal where Duke had several good chances, the Gamecocks got their first goal with 21:05 gone. Doug Allison, USC's leading scorer in the regular season with 37 points, took a Scott Cook pass in the Blue Devil penalty area and tapped it home when Duke goalkeeper Pat Johnston came ^ out of the net. 9 Allison stood alone with the ball in the Duke area and patiently waited for Johnston to make his move. 4,I just waited for him to come out," Allison said. "Then I slotted it past him. Scott did well to get a ball over. I don't know how he got it over. I think the defender made a mistake, and it came to my feet." Cook made it 2-0 eight minutes later when he hit a long ball over the box from the right side that ? caught Johnston out of position and went in just under the crossbar. The Blue Devils responded by pressing the attack and creating some chances that tested Gamecock keeper Warren Lipka. USC's groui Dendy*; Smith/ as Gamecocks Rw ROB I A lift ?? """ ""? Lipka stayed in goal until Kerr was in the box and then came out to cut the angle. "When he was about 25 yards out, he kicked the ball too far ahead of himself,'* Lipka said. "So I came out like I was gonna charge him and then stopped. Dave was pressuring him from behind so he knew he had to hit the ball, and he shanked it." With 4:46 left in the half. Duke's All-America forward Tom Kain found some space at the top of USC's area and hit a hard blast off his right foot that Lipka was well-positioned to calch. Ten minutes into the second half, Carolina iced the win with a Danny Ratcliff goal to made it 3-0. The Gamecocks held on for the rest of the match to limit the Blue Devils to three second-half shots. On the occasions that Kain and Kerr got free of their defenders, Gamecock sweeper Billy Hency came through with the key tackles that time and again snuffed a Duke attack. "Billy was outstanding today, I don't think he put a foot wrong all day," Berson said. With the victory, USC evened its record at 5-5 and avenged a loss to the Midshipmen in Annapolis, Md., last season that spoiled lite Gamecocks' perfect record and dream of a national championship. Though USC led 14-3 in the first quarter, the Middies refused to give up the ship and gradually chipped away South Carolina's lead. Navy running back Napoleon McCallum scored three touchdowns in the second half, including two quick scores in the fourth quarter, to give the Midshipmen a 31-27 lead with 9:12 left to play. It turned out to be plenty of time for the Gamecocks to make a comeback, as USC took the ball at its own 24-yard line and went 76 yards for the game's final score. Quarterback Mike Hold scrambled nine yards for the touchdown, and Scott Hagler's extra point gave USC a threepoint lead with 2:21 remaining. "Going into the ball game, we were well aware we would have to play the full 60 minutes to win," USC head coach Joe Morrison said after the game, "but we didn't know we were going to have to play the last 30 minutes so hard. One thing for sure, the game was exciting." Perhaps too exciting for some Gamecock fans as Navy had one more shot to put the ball into the end zone. But Midshipmen head coach Gary Tranquill instead opted to go for the win, and called on quarterback Robert Misch to put the ball in the air. Misch, however, was unable to connect with his receivers on the last drive, thanks in part to a Kenneth Robinson sack for an 11-yard loss and a strong performance by USC's defensive secondary. With the loss, Navy fell to 3-7. \r "We (were) 3-6 on the year, | and we don't play for a tie," p Tranquill said after the game. r "They (The Midshipmen) are as ft frustrated as 1 am because they h played their hearts out the entire f game. "I just can't understand it ? we play like hell and we lose." Going into the game, 'JSC was questionable at the running back position, as Kent Hagood and Raynard Brown were sidelined by sprained ankles. Ironically, however, the ground game made the difference in the outcome, as Carolina gained 398 yards rushing. Thomas Dendy paced USC with a career-high 156 yards, followed by Anthony Smith's 123 yards and Hold's 104, marking the first time three Gamecocks have rushed for 100 or more individual yards. USC wraps up its season this Saturday in Columbia against arch-rival Clemson, which lost a heartbreaker to Maryland last weekend, 34-31.
