April 26, 1985 E ntertainment THE GAMECOCK Cult film 'Eraserhe; By Patrick Jean The adventures of a stoned misfit, his spastic girlfriend and their half-human child are the focal point of "Eraserhead," an unusual cult film playing at midnight tonight and tomorrow at the Russell House Theater. John Nance stars in the film as Henry, something of a zombie. He is somewhat alienated in the universe, and his coiffure doesn't help any. The hairdo is the most odd and towering since Elsa Lanchestcr was "The Bride of Frankenstein." Along comes an equally traumatized girl, played by Charlotte Stewart. Now they're two people alone in a glutinous world. Soon after that, they're three. Their baby is something of a cross between the star-child of "2001" and Stripe, the most strikingly gruesome feature of a gruesome film. THE REMAINDER of the 90-minute film deals with Henry's journey through deliquescence. This journey is usually portrayed with stark, grim humor and indifference. Henry's life slowly turns downward, followed by a grisly surprise Rf f B',; ' WBT ^ l pis pyrr,? jw 1 "Eraserhead" will be shown at the Russell House Midnight Movii PnlBimk!*! There arc no memorable performances. However, the name of the person who made his directorial debut with this film should ring a bell. He's David Lynch, famous for "The Elephant Man" and "Dune." He made an amazing visual effort on a shoestring budget. In fact, "Eraserhead" probably never would have been made if Lynch hadn't received a grant from the American Film Institute. "Eraserhead" is quite an unusual and grisly film, with phenomenal visual effects done on a low budget. Some of these effects are extremely squeamish and may not be for everybody. In fact, the film's odd plot and theme aren't exactly commonplace. However, it does promise to make a thought-provoking and refreshing night at the movies. It's not the kind of film for a first date, nor should you eat a big meal before seeina it. Rut it is worthwhile, and the sort of once-in-a lifetime film that you'll probably never see again.
