Hudson Chip Whitaker spent a recent weekend driving in a national race at Daytona Beach, even though he had no experience as a professional race car driver. Whitaker, a USC sophomore, competed with 80 other students in the Third Annual Collegiate Driving Championships sponsored by Chrysler Corporation April 14-16. He became involved with the race last February when Chrysler held eligibility races at USC to pick the best student auto cross driver. The winner of the campus competition would race in the national championship. Similar races were held at 80 other universities across the nation. His combined time for the two courses was just over seventy seconds. Even though all but eight drivers were knocked out of the competition by the heats, Whitaker saw no hard feelings during the final race. "We had lost, but we were pulling for the ones running."
