At present, the issues that the letters address are forgotten by the time the letters are printed. I his Thursday The Gamecock rcecivcd a petition . wi u.. \ ai .. .1 ~ ...t.: -i- . - - m^iivu u> muuciiw wiutii requested us 10 prim l etters to the Editor more promptly. We wish we could. Hut although this problem of timeliness does exist, there are some factors students should consider. Our newspaper has received more letters from students this vear than in several nrevinns Because of limited space on the I Id it oral page and the (act that we publish thrice-weekly, we frequently are not able to print student opinions and responses as quickly as we would like. Additionally, students often write letters that are in excess of 300 words. Our letters policy, printed at the bottom of this page, clearly states that letters should not exceed that limit. When we receive a letter of greater length, we arc forced to edit it so it will meet the length requirement or wait until there is adequate space to print it, so it won't further delay the appearance of other letters. We must also contact all letter-writers to verify their identities. As authors are frequently unavaname, we arc not able to print thoir opinions until \nc can get this confirmation. The Gamecock in list have authors' tclopliono numbers, class standings and mailing addresses, but this information frequently docs not appear on the letters. While designing the L:ditorial page, wc also consider which of the letters received will lit into the page's limited confines. Therefore, not only do we print letters according to timeliness, subject matter and the writers' availability, we print those that will lit. Yes, we want to publish your letters as quickly as possible, but The Gamecock cannot guarantee when they will appear. Leslie Dun.son, editor-in-chief Professor's clemency opinions not based on fact, student says To the editor: Why is it so much easier to ascribe base motives to others than to ourselves? This guy needs a lecture himself ? from our Governor Kiley. Governor Riley made it very clear that, while he opposes the death penalty, Executive Clemency does not empower him to overturn the law of the state ? but only to assure a fair trial under that law. Tufts Philosophy: If you disagree with me, your motives are politically and morally base. As Ronald said when one of his kids called up to give him hell ? we can do without that.
