Much to our dismay, the foods we eat do affect us in
various ways, from raising and lowering our energy levels to
determining how we feel about ourselves.
It's easy to munch 011 every morsel that catches our eye. We
ignore our bodies, which have to deal with these tasty tidbits
long after we've forgotten them. Being choosy will bring our
palates more pleasure and cause our bodies to thank us in
noticeable ways.
National food boards, includiiu: the American Heart
Association and Senate Select Committee on Nutrition and
Human Needs, have set similiar guidelines to aid us in being
good to ourselves.
Here's a summary:
I. Increase the plant portion of your diet by eating more
fruits, vegetables and whole grains. I his includes drinking ^
skim milk, which can be considered in the plant category
because of its lack of fat.
2. Decrease intake of animal products, particularly red
meats. Replace red meats with fish and poultry, hut be careful
how they are prepared. Out of the 21 meals \se eat each week,
no more than three should include red meat.
You're probably thinking, "At Russell House? Impossible!"
But where there's a will, there's always a way. Below are
a USC student's guidelines to beat the Russell Mouse regime.
1. Take advantage of the salad bar. It's great.
2. Watch for baked fish and chicken on the menu. Thev do
nave ii.
3. Avoid the specials; they rarely specialize in good
nutrition.
4. Enjoy the daily variety of vegetables. Spinach and broc- '
coli are good choices.
5. Avoid the grill, the home ol fatt> red meats and Iried
foods.
6. The deli oilers good bread choices, including whole
wheat. Turkev breast and clieddar I'liem1 Ivan :i l?:imlnir?>.?r
any day.
7. l-.ai dinner before 7 .p.m. so you're not forced to eat on
the second floor. I rving is the Gamecock Snack Bar's specialty.
Consider ;in evening walk to Wendy's salad hat instead.
Good luck with the new menu, and enjoy the rewarding
results your bod\ will give you.
