By Pat Jean What do four dead aliens, a shower of ice cubes, a beat-up Chevrolet Malibu worth $20,000, a TV evangelist who admits he wants money, and generic beer have in common? Plenty, if you're thinking of "Rcpo Man," a bi/arre cult comedy, playing at the Russell House Theater tonight and tomorrow at midnight. The film features a strange plot, good punk music, and some ol me nest one-liners m years, 11 aiso nas umiKciy coMars in limilio Lslcve/ ("The Breakfast Club") and Harry Dean Stanton ("Paris, Texas"). fcstcvcz is Otto, the punk hero with a crewcut, down on his luck l irsi he's fired from his supermarket iob for not snae inn cans properly. Then he catches his girl in bed with his best friend. Along conies Hud (Stanton), who offers him money to "get my old lady's car out of a bad area." He's stuck with generic food, and his zombie parents have sent all their monev to Reverend Larry, a TV evaneclist who wants to mash communism abroad and liberal humanism at home. Worst of all, there's Leila (Olivia Barash), a member of the United Fruitcake Outlet, planning to put a picture of four dead aliens that look uncannily like sausage on me "jonnny Carson Show." She hopes to find the aliens, stuck in the trunk of an old Chevy Malihu, before they turn to mush. The trunk has strange powers. It works like a miniature neutron bomb, melting people but leaving their shoes intact. Stranger yet is the driver, J. Frank Parnell (Fox Harris), a lobotomized scientist who feels like his mind is starting to erode. A friend of his ? the designer of the neutron bomb ? also had a lobotomy. "Now he's well again," he says. The Malibu is worth $20,(XX) to the rcpo men. The best subplot of all is Miller (Tracey Walter), the mechanic at the Helping Hand Acceptance Corp. Some of his beliefs include: there is a cosmic unconsciousness, especially about shrimp; John Wayne was gay; all the missing people in South America use time machines or flying saucers to go to the past; and he refuses to learn to drive because, as he puts it. "the more you drive, the less intelligent you are." Does everything work out? Do Otto and Leila find happiness? Who gets the Malibu? What part docs Reverend Larry have in all of this? Do Duke, Debbie, and Archie pay for their sushi? Was John Wayne gay? The answer: Who cares? That's the film's attitude about all these situations. The climax is un prcdictabJc, and as tunny and oddball as the rest ot the mm. OUTSTANDING CAST members include Lstevez, who deserves his leading man status; Stanton, who deserves more roles like this; and Walter, who gets what he deserves. The music is fantastic and includes the big names in punk music: Circle Jerks, Suicidal Tendencies, Burning Sensations, and Black Mag, to name a few. There's also a show-stopping title song by Iggy Pop. The film has subtle relcrences to two other cult lavorites, "The Rocky Horror Picture Show" and "l iquid Sky." Unlike "I iquid Sky," it's consistently entertaining, funny, and odd. It also never gets lost in trying to convey a message because it has no message. "Rcpo Man" is likely to become the cult classic of the 1980's. It's not to be missed. Admission is $1.50. Tickets go on sale at 11:30 each night. Take a dale. Take your mother. Don't take your car. It'll never forgive you. _ _ '-fflnHMiiiiMffitwrtatair id I he "space" music arranged of USC's Instructional Services ike Phillips of the S.C.
