The island has served as the setting for parts of the James Bond-007 films. "Never Say Never Again" and "Thunderball." The dockside "Never Say Never Again" bar behind the Sheraton British Colonial motel, where 007 first encountered his nubile nemesis, makes much of the connection. But it takes a native to point out the beachfront cave setting for "Thunderball" on the beach near Lyford Cay, the elite section on the other, western, side of the island. South Carolina's Grand Strand will play host to-as many as 40,000 Canadian and 60,000 American visitors during the 24th Annual Canadian-American Days Festival March 9 through 17. Sponsored by the Myrtle Beach Area Chamber of Commerce, the event is a celebration of the importance of Canadian tourism along the Grand Strand. The Canadian-American Days Festival was begun in 1962 to celebrate Canadian tourism along the Grand Strand. The need for the celebration was seen as area residents began to sec more and more Canadian license plates, hence, more Canadian visitors. The first Can-Am Days Festival featured only a few events, but the purpose even then was to stress the importance of our Canadian visitors. ENTERTAINMENT DURING this year's festival will feature musical concerts, art exhibits, dance contests, various tours, sporting events and many other activities for Canadians ?and Americans alike. According to festival chairman Ttrrv Arn/?ti*? "'Thic Can-Am Days Festival will feature more free events with an emphasis on hospitality. We will have activities spanning the entire length of the 60-mile Grand Strand." Since its inception, several activities have become annual events, but each year new and exciting programs are added in addition to the regularly scheduled events. The second Annual National Shag Dance Championship will kick off the week-long festival along the Grand Strand. The Myrtle Beach Area Chamber of Commerce has invited more than 20 professional and novice shag couples from across the Southeast to take part in the two-day competition at Studebaker's. Barry Thigpcn, Chairman of the National Shag Dance Championship, said "This is our way of officially recognizing and promoting this unique Carolinas dance style."
