? THE GAMECOCK Opinion March (>, 11)85 ? Page 7 Time-out Don't forget there's life after spring break The North was hit by a winter storm Monday that dumped up to three feet of snow in some parts of 0P South Dakota. Thousands of people were stranded in their homes, roads were buried by the white stuff and work was at a standstill. In Columbia, it was sunny and 75 degrees, i Spring looks like it has finally made its arrival. Spring break begins Friday and the annual trek to Florida or Myrtle Beach for the week-long holiday will get underway. And not a moment too soon. Getting away from USC will be a blessing that most will cherish. With a basketball team that is having anything but a shining season, and a Student wir- Government election that stirred the imagination of only those running, this has not been a great start to a i Congratulations arc in order to Kelvin Stroble, and we hope he'll use his break to start planning his term as SCi president. He has a lot of work to do, and the earlier he gets started the better. Spring is traditionally the hardest semester to get anything done. Professors have to contend with scantily-clad girls tearing the boys' attention away from one of their lectures. Homework, going to the bio lab, doing term papers, writing stories for journalism classes ? we all have things that we'd rather W' be doing when the weather gets warmer. ' The students who picked tip a rake and helped clean up Moore Gardens sacrificed an afternoon of sunbathing or playing frisbee to make an area of campus more attractive. As the semester wears on, other students will be able to take advantage of the well-done job by these volunteers. I So, enjoy spring break and relax. Have a uood time at tlie beach or at home with your family. Forget about the term paper that's due or the biology grade that seems to be getting worse every day you cut another class. vv. .lust be prepared to work when you come back. As a black student, his remarks offended me ten times more than anv of the offenses Miss USC may have presented. To imply that a black female who wins a major "white pageant" looks or acts white shows that his own biases are deeply based. He stereotypes the black person by saying how they arc supposed to act or look, denying their individualism and supporting the old biased ideas of how blacks arc supposed to relate. The black experience in America is just as diverse as the white expcriencc in America. In many cases the experiences are the same and those who compete in these pageants arc also diverse individuals as arc their judges and their actions can only convey their individual experiences. His separation of black and white rejects the facts that by Berke Breathed ; nw ms Jesse mMS on m pfiont. saip hc anp hct'hce' his frienps piw a me - rmr jesse ' oven t\mwr on we <WSjPJVl, W btxmkacon' ar \ hoo'hoo' V1ELUWEU-1 MtXU&Sl AflERALLTI ^j-ho * *? ?-?? Dean Albert Scroggins has helped a lot of people ? especially me. I never intended to come to USC. But my plans for a brilliant future at Palm Beach Junior College changed. I came to the SII'A conference at the College of Journalism and met someone who changed my mind ? Dean Scroggins. I'm not sure why, but he adopted me.
