February 25, 1985 Opinion THE GAMECOCK Clems on president's ac prove need for compeU President Bill Atchley's reign over Clemson University may soon come to an end as questions about his ability to competently manage the school continue to arise. In analysis, Atchley's removal from the presidency would be in the school's best interest. His attempts to reorganize the university's athletic department have been dismal. He has failed to improve Clemson's poor public image, which stems in part from two recent drug scandals, and he has failed to display any political finesse, a neccessary skill in the academic world. In comparing Atchley with USC President James Holderman, several differences are obvious. Holderman has done much for USC through his ability to rub elbows with the right people at the right time. Atchley, a poor speaker with an overly aggressive personality, lacks skills in management and appears to have little jcontroi over certain .members of his faculty and staff. It is true that these men have different leadership styles, but Holderman, unlike Atchley, has handled opposition and criticism about himself, his administration and USC in a decisive manner. Clemson University is suffering from a dismal public image and is continuing to flounder in a sea of controversy. Clearly, Atchley is not the man able to get the school back on track. In the aftermath of USC's own troubles in its athletic department, USC has come out on top and has managed to consistantly build up its reputation. Clemson Univer suy must try to raise itself from the rubble, and the first step should be to relieve Atchley of his duties. You can complain about the all-youcan-eat barfaterias on campus, but there is no denying that the snack bar is the scourge of campus eating establishments. And Saga (or Soviet Attempt to Gag America) gets away with it because there's no other place on campus to get food in a hurry (HAH!) that can be eaten on the run. BECAUSE THE GAMECOCK offices arc on the third floor of Russell House, Leslie, Ronnie and I eat at the snack bar quite often. Last week, the three of us had a particularly memorable trip down the steps for dinner. It was about 5:30 p.m. when we arrived at the snack bar, and the lines of the hapless hungry were already wound _ around the juke box. We took our place in line and prepared ^ for the long arduous journey to mealtime. Ten minutes later we hadn't moved more than five feet. Obviously someone had ordered enough food to feed the Carolina Band, or the microwave oven wasn't nuking the food fast enough. It was then that Leslie asked me where Rnnnip wac u//. turned around and saw that he was stuck to the floor where someone had dropped an iced tea. The snackbar was a giant 'diner motel' ? diners check in, but they never reach the counter. YOU'VE HEARD of the Scarsdale diet? Well, the Saga diet is a lot simpler. All you have to do is wait on line for a hotdog ^ at the Gamecock Snack Bar and you lose 15 pounds. We waited in line and, after pulling Ron off the floor, it was our turn to order. "I'd like a slice of pepperoni pizza, unsweetened tea and one scoop of vanilla ice cream in a dish," Leslie said. "Sorry, no can do," said the woman behind the counter. If there's one thing that can be said for the snack bar it's that the service is always friendly. Slow, but friendly. "THE PIZZA'S not out yet, there's no more unsweetened tea, and the only ice cream we have left is chocolate." Leslie settled for a chicken sandwich and a glass of ice water. I had the same thing because I didn't feel like going through the hassle of changing what my tastebuds had been 4* preparing for. But Ronnie took the bull by the horns and asked the counterperson "What do you have?" He settled for something called a "Mountain Climber," named thus because by the time it makes its way into the bag, you can climb Mount Everest with Nell Carter on your back. DINNER IN HAND, we walked back up the steps to the of lice, we never eat in the snack bar because there's nothing more unpleasant than seeing fellow students in agony. Sure, it's easy to complain about the food at the Gamecock Snack Bar. What's hard is eating it. The Gomecock I The Gurncock welcomtt letters and Quest editorials.
