THE GAMECOCK Entertainment February 25, 1985 - Page 11 ' Cartoon book succes By Marita Porto If you're into coincdy and don't mind a few vulgar words, Sam Hurt's "I'm Pretty Sure I've Got My Death-Ray In Here SnmcwhiTc" ic f/?? <>? The exploits of Eycbeam, a college student, Ratcliff, his roommate, and Sally, his girlfriend, arc humorous and often very true-to-life cartoons. Hurt, a University of Texas graduate, has hit upon a definite success with these adventurous new cartoons. ^ "EYEBEAM" IS a must for all students who have gone through exams, relationships, worry and mental apathy. Hurt develops his characters through dialogue and fantasy. Eyebeam isn't the typical college student, but he does have some of the same problems as other college students. He has a tendency to let his mind wander far from his law-school pursuits, and his best friend seems to be a recurring hallucination of a monster. However, Ratcliff, Eyebeam's roommate, is a character everyone knows. He's your friend, enemy or whatever: the person who always parties and waits until the last minute to p siuuy lor un exam, ries a oeer drinker, into drugs, and has never had a date in his life. Eyebeam's girlfriend Sally is a modern college woman, whose main reason for going to college is education, not marriage. She seems to care about Eyebeam in her own "fanciful" way, but without the restraining commitment most students have in their college relationships. Her friend Beth is more interested in "catching a guy" with the "quality which transcends other qualities ? the nicest ass this side of Michelangelo's David." Vernon, Eyebeam's law student friend, is another good character. Vernon, though a nice guy, has the bad habit of drinking beer in class, which Eyebeam considers anything but offensive. Although Hurt's characters are artistically undeveloped, they are likeable, funny and, most of all, real. College students can identify with these characters because they have seen them before over and over again in people they know. In one scene from the comic strip, E'yebeam eats Ratcliff's brownies, which are tainted with an illegal substance. Another scene includes Eyebeam talking with his "hallucination," who tells him that hallucinations "lead very sporadic lives. We go from nightmare to nightmare; we do an occasional drug experience. . EYEBEAM THEN SAYS, "HI bet you stayed busy during the sixties," to which the hallucination replies, "I'm still resting. But anyway, my main goal in life is to find myself a real nut so I can work full-time at regular hours. No offense." Sam Hurt's "Eyebeam" may not yet be artistically mature, but it's without a doubt one comic strip to watch for in the future. And if vou need a oood Inuoh Hurt's "I'm Pr?.n? I've Got My Death-Ray in Here Somewhere" is a book of comics as weird as "The Far Side" and as hysterically funny ' as "Bloom County." ~TEXTElilDED~wfAin " BTFOCAL ]j | SOFT CONTACT J EYEGLASSES j| | LENSES Limit As Advertised jfl I Lenses J , ?a Si;l | w4149' ?55 ij * Power Range +6 to -6 J j > i Carolina tlicinn ! farnlina (licinn !!
