February 15, 1985 E ntertainment THE GAMECOCK 'Five and Dii By Amy Bedenbaugh^ A nostalgic five-and-dime in a small Texas town is a place for remembering the past and revealing shocking secrets for five friends in USC's production of the Ed Graczyk play "Come Back to the Five and Dime, Jimmy Dean, Jimmy Dean." The play opened Tuesday to a less-thancapacity crowd in Drayton Hall Theatre, but the enthusiasm of those present made up for the empty seats. The five friends, all members of the "Disciples of James Dean" fan club, have reunited for a party on Sept. 30, 1975, the 20th anniversary of their hero's death. The setting, featuring the store and soda fountain on one side, with old bar stools and a portrait of the Last Supper over the bar, and the stock room on the other, gives the actors space for combining scenes from 20 years ago with the present. Karly in the play, however, (he simultaneous appearance of the young Mona with the present Mona became confusing. In a flashback, young Mona walks into the store with a suitcase as the present Mona stands by. At this point, young Mona could oiciltr micf alf nn f r\r Af hnr mnmhnr r\ the fan club returning for the reunion. Director Russell Green should be commended for his casting. Nancy Young is lovable and unforgettable as Edna Louise, the mother of seven children, going on eight, who tries to squeeze her protruding stomach into a tight evening gown to dress up for the party. Young Mona came to life with the energetic talent of Sherry Ham. Leslec Bozard brings passion and vibranec to the role of young Sissy, and Art Morton brings sensitivity to the role of tender-hearted Joe.
