Study: Higher i won't stop 'thr By College Preti Service MADISON ? Students who drink and drive are stimulationseekers who are not likely to be deterred by laws raising the minimum legal drinking age, recent research by a University of \1/:- ' iswuiisiu team suggests. t Instead of trying to curb students' adventuresome habits, counselors should help students J i find new ways to satisfy their need for thrills, the researchers say. Their conclusions arc based on a study comparing student drinking and driving habits with personality types, says UW psychologist Frank Farley, who conducted the study along with s grad student Sharon McNeelv. THEY FOUND that students \ most likely to drink excessively c and drive tend to be extroverted 1 risk-takers who prefer change i and novelty and are attracted to | experimental lifestyles. t "These people tend to reject i rules and regulations of any kind," Farley said. "Minimum- 1 age drinking and driving laws are just creating more rules for them to reject." < Although these students are < more prone to delinquency, the 5 researchers say, they are just as ? "We need to get hese people to transfer their inerests from one to the other. "IF COUNSELORS arc iware of the characteristics of extreme stimulation-seekers, hey can help channel their inergy into the creative potential." To date, Farley and McNcely lave surveyed only a small sample of students. They admit heir results may not reflect all students. But their thesis that the need or stimulation is the key to jnderstanding and controlling irunk driving ? the largest ciller of those 16 to 24 ? is supported by accident statistics. Farley said those in their late eens and early 20s have the greatest need for stimulation. The plot of traffic accidents 'ollows the same pattern. Safety regulations such as .eat belt laws and speed limits imply prompt the timulationseekers to take even bigger isks. Farley said. ALENTINES" for the ONE YOU LOVE (t.
