Page 8 ? February 11, 1985 Opinion THE GAMECOCK ^ I Asbestos RBsidence halls deserve USC's immediate attention David Rinker, USC system vice president for facilities planning, announced this past week that significant levels of asbestos were found in several campus buildings, including Columbia Hall. The university administration should be commended for its straightforward and honest approach in admitting a problem exists, but it is puzzling that Rinkor A Cr? Hnn't hr?1if?vf that rf?cirtr?nrr? hall mr. rcction should take first priority. In a press conference with The Gamecock and WUSC this past week, Rinker said asbestos was found in the concrete ceiling spray in Columbia Hall, but correction in the building would not come first in the university's overall rennovation plan. Asbestos, in the solid state, is not dangerous unless it is broken off and crushed. But as most college students know, horse play in a dorm room is a fact of life, and there is a real nossibilitv that ashes.m dust could be exposed. Columbia Hall residents cannot be comfortable with the fact that asbestos is literally "hanging over their heads." A touch to a ceiling in the dormitory, caused by a ball bouncing and striking the material, could break the material free, allowing it to drift to the floor and be crushed. Results show that exposure to the material may result in asbestosis, a nonmalignant lung disease, lung cancer or gastrointestinal cancer. Students living in the building should not have to live in fear of cancer, nor should they have to refrain from normal activities conducted within the confines of their rooms. Now that the problem has been identified, it is USC's responsibility to ensure the safety of its students. Asbestos is also present in other buildings in which students live, such as Sims Dorm and Nada Apartments, although it is in areas not easily accessable. Unfinished. Expensive. Useless." I recently walked around the mall and made a few observations. As to being empty, the mall seems to be around 70 percent leased. There were a few spaces yet to be leased and finish I'U, yci i iiiidgiiii. <11 i:<t ait watching as to determine profitability in that location. I saw the big double page ad in The Gamecock advertising the mall's grand opening. Those ads must cost around a couple of thousand dollars to run, which the monev coins to The Gamecock. With having those shops on campus, what better way is there to advertise, but in the student newspaper? However, I presume Ms. Farmer would rather forego the potential thousands of dollars in advertising. I guess 1 just don't understand her purpose.
