* Westmorelan By AMOciated Pum NEW YORK ? Lawyers for CBS will call one of their most important witnesses to the stand this week in their defense against retired Gen. William tir it- # i ?>a ?in:~~ i:l.i wcsiiiiuxciaiiu 5 juu miiiiuii nuci aim. Col. Gains Hawkins, who was in charge of estimating enemy strength for Westmoreland's staff in Vietnam, was interviewed on CBS' 1982 Ip documentary, "The Uncounted Enemy: A Vietnam Deception," which is the basis of the general's suit. Many of the network's other witnesses have testified they believed Westmoreland imposed a ceiling on estimates of enemy strength, though they did not have first-hand knowledge. ON THE BROADCAST, Hawkins said Westmoreland's staff, which * [GOT THE MID-WINTER 6 [BILLS TO PAV AND POC I EMPTY? LET US HELP V f TO S80/MONTH BV OOf I r? CBS has already called more than a dozen witnesses to back its contention that Westmoreland distorted the truth about Vietnamese Communist strength in order to maintain political support for the war. But Hawkins is the only defense witness who was highly placed in Westmoreland's command in the fall of 1967 when the final figures were being thrashed out for a report to President Lyndon Johnson and other policy makers. Westmoreland, 70, was America's commander in Vietnam from 1964 until 1968. LUES? I " KETS I OU EARN UP iATING SUMMER JOI SELORS at Can ^r^sJxUjv (girls). As a result, said CBS, Johnson and the American nublic were taken by surprise when the communists launched the powerful Tet offensive in early 1968. The general maintains that no information was suppressed and that CBS distorted an honest dispute among intelligence analysts to make it appear he had misled his superiors. The broadcast, he says, falsely besmirched a 40-year military career. Hawkins, scheduled to begin testifying late today or tomorrow was Westmoreland's "order of battle" chief. sbapamer 'k/l J OPENINGS FOR CAMP COUN j np Sea Gull (boys) and Camp Seafarer . as a camp counselor is a challenging ; pporturiity to work with young peo Sea Gull and Seafarer are health and ] opment camps located on the coast ; la and feature sailing, motorboating, 1 i, plus many usual camping activities e variety of major sports. Johnson said students have been intermittently parking in the hotel's above- and below-ground parking area at Assembly and Blossom streets for the past 18 years. During the past five years, however, the problem has persisted to the point that several general managers sporadically towed cars away without warnings. "Our parking spaces are limited and exclusively for our guests," said Johnson, who hopes this warning will curb students from parking in the hotel's reserved area and having to pay towing expenses. "We don't have to warn, but we are," Johnson said. CHOCOLATE ROSES SILK ROSES with CHOCOLATES CHOCOLATE KISSES BOXES of Imported CHOCOLATES TOYS & NOVELTIES, and more!
