A class by thems r i f t-resnmen piay By Bob Lang If the performance of USC's freshman basketball players is as impressive in Carolina's remaining 10 games as it was in Saturday's USC-Florida State meeting, the Gamecocks' opponents should begin preparation for them now. In the Gamecocks' 92-77 victory over FSU, James, a 6-6 guard, and Thornton, a 6-8 forward, together showed they are worthy of that title. Together, they accounted for 27 points and 13 rebounds. Junior ccnlcr/forward Duanc Kendall said he has noticed the change in the freshmen from the beginning of the season. "We're really starting to gel as a team," Kendall said. "The freshmen aren't playing like freshmen anymore. They are playing like veterans. "I'm really proud of them and of the progress that they've made." Coach Bill Foster was equally impressed Saturday. "Keith James and Taronc Thornton got off to a very good start and played very will tonight," he said. "Both kept their composure." Before Saturday's game, James was shooting only 42 percent per game from the floor. Against the Seminoles, however, he hit 10 of 13 shots, many of them 20-footers or more, had 20 points and 77 percent shooting. James, who is second in scoring this season for USC to junior forward Linwood Moye, said practicing more and making his first couple of shots in the game helped him against FSU. "1 started coming to practice early and working on outside shooting," James said. "Before, I wasn't practicing on my shooting too much, and you have to practice to get better. That was proven to me tonight. "When you hit the first couple of shots...it helps you feel confident the whole game," he said. Even Florida State coach Joe Williams said he was surprised at James's performance. "We never thought James, who was in a slump, would hit some shots that would be three-pointers in the NBA," he said. James is from Baltimore, Md., where he played for perennial national power Dunbar High School. Also from Baltimore and a former high school teammate of James, is 6-3 guard Derrick Lewis. "Derrick has been a help to me," James said, referring to his adjustment to the team and to college life in general. "We help each other along." Lamar native Tony Shaw, a 6-4 guard who averages 4.1 points per game, also said he does not get in as much playing time as he would like, but that he, too, is learning. "! had to learn a lot of things (at USC) I didn't learn in high school," Shaw said. "But I'm just taking it in stride ? trying to get better and just contribute to the team as best I can." Coming off the bcnch in Saturday's game, Thornton scored seven points added seven rebounds in the 19 minutes he played. Like Lewis, Thornton said he is well aware of the big difference between high school and college ball. "Here, it is a lot more physical, and everybody in major college basketball can play to some extent or else they wouldn't be out there," he said. The sixth highest scorer oil the squad, Thornton said he too needs improvement. "My play could be a lot better. As far as rebounding, defensive play and my scoring ? that should all come with maturity."
