A 17-3 loss to Nebraska ended OSU's consecutive victories, ut the Cowboys resumed their winning ways for the five ames remaining before the battle of Oklahoma, which the Cowboys lost to the Sooners, 24-14. THE LOSS TO Oklahoma was perhaps the hardest for J much like a Carolina loss to Clemson would have been. OSU won every game it was favored to win this year, quite a eat in a year of supposed parady. In the two losing efforts, he Cowboys were underdogs to two of the nation's perennial lowerhouses, Nebraska and Oklahoma. OSU is not the big, overpowering team for which the Big:ight has a reputation. Rather, it is a small, quick team with a lotable defense. The Poke's defense has scored four touchdowns and T trapped its opponents for four safeties on the season. 6-4, 235 TACKLE Leslie O'Neal and 6-2, 215 Linebacker Matt Monger head an explosive OSU defense. O'Neal has 134 tackles on the season, 70 unassisted; 13 sacks; and 16 tackles : for a loss. p He was voted the Associated Press' defensive player of the : year, and is an AP and Sporting News Ail-American. Monger has 175 tackles, 82 unassisted; four sacks; and eight ! tackles for a loss. He was a walk-on for the Cowboys and was named an All-Big-Eight player this season. Monger is a three- I time Academic All-Conference performer as well. Strong saftey Rod Brown has six interceptions this season and is averaging 26.2 yards per return. Brown earned Kodak and Camp All-America honors for his efforts. OFFENSIVELY, the Cowboy attack is well balanced between the run and the pass out of the I-formation. Of 3984 total offensive yards, 2103 come from the run and 1971 off the pass. In Jacksonville, senior quarterback Rusty Hilger will be starting his third bowl game for OSU. He holds the school record for career completion efficiency at 58.8 percent. OSU runs three tailbacks out of its I- formation. Thurman Thomas, Shawn Jones, and Charles Crawford divide the duties evenly with Jones leading in total yardage at 688, but Jones leading the per game stats averaging 75.1 yards a contest. As the Cowboys prepare for the Gator Bowl t' y are relatively injury-free. The only exception is linebacker Jim Krebs who is out with extensive knee surgury. The Gator Bowl presents an opportunity for the 1984 OSU squad to become the first Cowboy team to ever win 10 games in one season. The first of OSU's eight previous bowl appearances was in the 1945 Cotton Bowl where the Cowboys defeated the Horned Frogs of Texas Christian, 34-0. In 1946, the Pokes beat St. Mary's 33-13 in the Sugar Bowl. The 1949 Delta Bowl was OSU's first bowl loss, shutout 20-0 by William and Mary. In the Blue Grass Bowl of 1958, OSU beat Florida State, 25- 1Z. In consecutive meetings with Brigham Young in 1974 Fiesta and 1976 Tangerine Bowl OSU was victorious, 16-6 and 49-21. The Pokes suffered their second bowl loss in the 1981 Independence Bowl to Texas A'M, 33-16. OSU returned 16 starters from last year's victory over Baylor for the 1984-85 season.
