Burns steals show By Andy Duncan "Oh God, You Devil," featuring the third incarnation of George Burns as The Creator, is a weak movie saved only by Burns's sprightly performance and a general mood of good feeling. This movie's sentiment occasionally gets thick as molasses, but in a year when movie screens have been plastered with such mean-spirited swill as "Silent Night, Deadly Night," it's hard to criticize a film that tells us to be nice to each other and tr? nrQU O littla tv I>iu; u lltliv IllUlt UllCU. This installment in the God series was directed by Paul Bogart from Andrew Bergman's screenplay. Neither are as talented as the director and writer of the original "Oh God," ? Carl Reiner and Larry Gelbart, respectively ? but Bergman has some fine movies to his credit including "The InLaws" and "Blazing Saddles." THIS SCRIPT is inferior to both of those, unfortunately. Ted Wass plays a struggling musician whose manager (Eugene Roche) can't book him anywhere but weddings. The despairing singer makes the mistake of saying that for a big break, "I'd sell my soul to the devil." Jgpp! = ? -i Great tasting pizza delive DiLiveri's ' crust is made fresh daily. This ? he literally does ? after the desperate client signs a special ? contract ? by putting the unknown into the body of a famed a rock singer whose own contract with Tophet has expired. te Tophet, of course, is Satan, and his client soon realizes he's made a very bad bargain indeed. In a very effective scene, Tophet visits the new star's palatial home and shrugs off the P power of God, saying heaven is almost empty these days but ^ for a few priests and cleaning ladies. "You know, they had to P close down one of the big dining rooms," he chortles. (He does have one good line though: fter. drinking some bad wine, he examines the label and mut;rs, "I've never seen wine with an expiration date before.") Mlich more interesting are the veteran character actors who op up unexpectedly in this movie: Jane Dulo as a society lady 'ho runs afoul of Tophet, James Cromwell as a perplexed rieSt and Arthur Malet as the rock star's butler. WHAT LIFE this movie has, though, is entirely contributed y Burns. We knew he could play God well, but the real svel^tion is what an effective Satan he makes. In one scene, a otel manager gives him some trouble, and Tophet slowly ulls the cigar from his mouth and gives the man an evil stare hat sent a case of the running creeps down your backbone. In summation, this version of the Faust theme is worth seeag for Burns; not only is the man a wonder, he makes a fanistic God.
