He also revealed that through hynosis, the heart rates and skin temperatures of subjects can be changed in much the same way of those of a sleeping preson. But hypnosis is not sleep and Mapes was quick to point that out. "There is no such thing as a trance." Theodore Barber, chief nsveholoeist at Massachusetts State Hospital writes, "Hypnosis is not a stage, it's whatever state you suggest." Mapes suggested some pretty hilarious states Thursday night. First, he chose his subjects by suggesting to the entire audience that we couldn't unclasp our hands. Those who actually couldn't were brought up on stage to become stars of the show. In short order, Mapes had those twenty people sleeping like babies in each others arms, chasing imaginary green men around the stage, participating in a "twisting" contest, experiencing gravity-free conditions in _ outer space and kissing complete strangers in fel the audience. | MAPF.S CONCLl'DKI) his act by | demonstrating age regression hypnosis on ! i J Mandatory e I writers meetir J Monday at 4:30 ] I 321. When Mapes suggested to them that threy were five years old, they were able to describe in detail the birthday parties they had that year. As Manes oxnlninoH thpv werp not remembering when they were five years old, they actually thought that they were five years old. Indeed, when instructed to write their names on a blackboard, all three subjects had the unsure handwriting of a young child. Modern hypnotism no longer resembles the vaudevillian practices of sticking people with pins and turning them into monkeys or barking dogs. It has evolved into a sophisticated science that can be used for self-improvement and medically prescribed therapy. WITH HIS stage act, Mapes hopes to educate a skeptical public on the positive aspects of his profession. Mapes has brought his act to over 800 colleges and universities, and he enjoys an 80 percent rebooking rate. Who knows, perhaps he leaves a post-hypnotic suggestyion at each school he visits instructing them to rebook his act. l et's hope he put the whammy on CPU and will be back next year. ntertainment ig will be held p.m. in RH room *s must attend! ______ ? 111 I xnead )lours / ; it / I 1 / y? g??H, Mall Haywood Mall j )ia Greenville [i
