For freshmen athletes such as Keith Leeper, adjustment means hard work on the soccer field as well. Leeper is a starting midfielder for USC's soccer team for this season . Head coach Mark Berson said Leeper's starting position is quite an accomplishment for a freshman. LEEPER HAS scored five goals with one assist for a total of 11 points so far this season, he lias one game-winning goal to his credit against Old Dominion which came in the Carolina Invitational Tournament. Leeper was named Most Valuable Player by the coaches. Leeper has started all 13 games for the Gamecocks. Berson said his "ability to see things on the field and create attacking opportunities" makes Leeper one of those special freshmen wuu lb auie iu muii iiij> him ycdi. "He has very good composure with the ball," Berson said. MUCH OF Leeper's hard work has come in having to adjust to the pace of a college game as opposed to a high school game. He said college games are more demanding. "In high school, there's not as much skill, you just get the ball and have fun. Here, everybody plays to play," Leeper said. Berson describes LeeDer as the link bet ween the people around him and this is the of the Bloom le Gamecock. mm am V I if you don't g< taken for the Room 316 Ri Oct. 1-19 Mon.-Fri. 9 1. 191 IMMAIIWB'il'tMi nu offfiuiififill The Garn< I j position adjustment he has to make coming out of high school soccer. r* ! "I'VE PLAYED some good games and I I've played some terrible games," he aid. I'm | trying to get to where I'm playing good all the time. Along with Leeper's transition game, Ber- \ son said "working on maintaining concentration for 90 minutes" was another goal as such intensity was not demanded in high school. He said it feels great to be ranked, but that he tries not to dwell on the fact. "If you think about it (the ranking) you're just thinking about a number. You just have to go out and play and win every game," he said. The young midfielder commented that he would like to see more people at the games, "It does help with a lot more people there. It definitely makes a difference." et your portrait I 5 yearbook at: I issell House 2& 1-5 9nt necessary oes It Better I et & Black I B55SS5553S55ippES55555S5Sa
