THE GAMECOCK Sports October 5, 1984 ? Page 11 Ilnrlofoatorl 115! WW By Tracy Mix?* f Despite USC's placement in the nation's top-20 college football poll this week, head coach Joe Morrison said his squad won't be taking any upcoming opponents lightly. "First of all, I'm very happy for our players and coaches who worked so hard to attain this," he said. "We're all very happy, but we're only in the third week of the season and we have eight difficult games ahead ? starting with Kansas State." The Gamecocks, 3-0, put their undefeated record on the line against the Wildcats at 1:30 p.m. tomorrow at Williams-Brice Stadium. Tied with Iowa for 20th in the nation by United Press International, Carolina earned recognition on the poll for the Gamecocks' 17-10 upset victory over the Georgia Bulldogs last week. "I DON'T know if we're surprised to be undefeated," Morrison said, "but it sure feels good to be there. The win over Georgia just turned out to be a good football game for us." Morrison credits the Gamecock defense and newly found entnusiasm lor the undeteated mark. The "fire ant" defensive unit ranks 14th in the nation in total defense and ninth against the rush. "Enthusiasm is another thing that keeps us in the game," the coach said. "I only hope we can keep it up going into (tomorrow's) game." Morrison said the Gamecocks expect a physical game with Kansas State, saying, "They're a big, physical team. They throw the ball well, and they vary their defensive front." USC RUNNING back Raynard Brown said the Wildcats will attack with a "junky defense." "As an offensive squad, we'll have to be ready for any kind of defensive fronts they show," he said. "Kansas State will be tough because they have nothing to lose and everything to win. They're going to try to knock us off." i ne wildcats, i-j, lost to nttn-ranked Oklahoma, 24-6, last Saturday. Placekicker Steve Willis accounted for Kansas State's only points with field goals. Wildcat head coach Jim Dickey said his team will need "a lot of improvement" before facing the Gamecocks. "WE DEFINITELY need to improve in several areas, because South Carolina is such a strong team overall," he said. "We have a good offensive package led by (quarterback) Stan Weber, but Carolina's defense will really put us to the test.
