Tor uaruima : By Kelli Freas It sometimes pays to take a risk; at least it did in the case of USC soccer player Jim Sonefeld. Sonefeld, an Illinois native, came to Carolina to play soccer, walking on as a freshman. "It was a long way from Illinois to South Carolina with no scholarship as support," Sonefeld said. "I'm just grateful (head coach) Mark Berson gave me a chance." "JIM SHOWED excellent skills and technique," Berson said. "His composure with the ball showed me he had potential." After having completed the initial try-outs, Sonefeld said he faced a period of team adjustment and approval. "There seemed like a lot of pressure on me as a walkon," he said. "I felt I had to work twice as hard and constantly prove myself." Berson's original intention for the 6-foot-l-inch, 170-pound midfielcer last spring was to red-shirt him until fall. BECAUSE OF an epidemic of injuries, however, Sonefeld was called to duty by midseason. His first game was against Mercer. Sonefeld, a Spanish major, attended summer school and began pre-season conditioning July 1. "I felt confident in my skills, but needed to build strength and endurance," he said. "JIM'S HARD work and determination really paid off," Berson said. "He proved that he's deserving of a position on the , team." His name was listed among the starters in the Sept. 1 season opener against Western Carolina, which the Gamecocks won 11-1. Sonefeld contributed two goals to the victory. After eight games this season, seven of which he has started, Sonefeld is ranked one goal behind freshman midfielder Doug Allison in total points scored. Allison currently leads the team with 14 goals. "Both Doug and Jim have the same rhythmical fluidity in their ball handling," Berson said.
