TODAY-FRIDAY m o-Qn -7.no o n on I I Enroll Continued from page 1 Nobody in the world takes out a College of Education, unless you've decided that for the state's benefit and your own benefit, you've got to increase your quality and reduce your numbers," he said. SEVERAL YEARS ago school officials approached state leadership with a plan to voluntarily increase quality and reduce enrollment, and the state supported the plan. Large enrollment figures can be traced back to the baby boom period. "College growth patterns just exploded between 1963 and 1975, roughly. All the baby boom kids hit the market at once, and all the colleges expanded to absorb that tremendous flood of kids," Bolin said. In the 1970s, USC went through a period of liberalism. "We got real liberal back then. We were trying to give a lot of people the chance to find themselves academically," Bolin said. Five years ago students only had to pass half the courses ing the same period "we had an A, B, C, NC (no credit) system, we didn't have D and Fs. Everybody's grade point average was at least a 2.0. "YOU CAN'T be a good university if you arc as liberal as we used to be, you just can't do that in 1984," he said. "The whole game now is to attract really bright folks to come here." Today's more serious students value colleges with high v_ 111 wiiiiiviii .itauuai nv. iuiu. "If you ask the people who are in school, 1 think they're tickled to death that we've got increased standards and it makes their degree more worthwhile. "The ones who didn't get in, or who were kept out because of stricter standards, I suspect don't like it at all. I'd be surprised if they did," he said. BOLIN INDICATED "a student body somewhere between 20,000 and 23,000 seems to be a number we can accommodate. If the kinds of things we're doing now allow us to have a strong student body of 22,000, then I think we'll be very happy with it. Right now it looks like we're doing what's right. It's kind of watch and see." Bolin said he doesn't see a direct impact on tuition because of the enrollment drop. "Tuition changes are reactions to outside forces. If the enrollment stabilizes and the economy in the state stabilizes, inflation stabilizes, then tuition should stabilize." ''You can't be a good university if you are as liberal as we used to be, you just can't do that in 1984. The whole game now is to attract really bright folks to come here." John Bolin admissions dtrtcter 4'The sad thing is (hat the first people who go home are usually the last group of people who got into school," he said. However, Bolin said the push for better quality is paying off. "We've seen our business school in the past 10 years grow in stature astronomically. Other schools have, too." "We've got international business programs that are first or second in the country. The MIB's (Masters in International Business) program, 1 think, is rated second in the nation," he said. "The business community in Columbia has recognized the College of Business as really very high class." y tear shall be dried Catholic Church on Devine Street, shall pass away.
