After the narrow 31-24 victory over The Citadel Sept. 8, USC head coach Joe Morrison said team enthusiasm against the Blue Devils would be necessary to win. "We were much more emotional this evening and more en inusiasuc man a cuupic 01 weens ago, ne saia. we naa a tremendous amount of enthusiasm." "I'M PROUD of (USC defensive coordinator) Tom Gadd, his staff and of course our defensive players." USC faces high-rated Georgia this Saturday, then Kansas State, Pittsburgh and Notre Dame the. following weekends. NEITHER CAROLINA nor Duke could produce a successful drive until midway through the second quarter, when USC recovered a Blue Devil fumble and proceeded to score. Allen Mitchell, who completed eight of 11 for 87 yards, ran right on the quarterback keeper for two yards and the touchdown. "The defender was outside, and I was able to turn it in, get up field and into the end zone," he said of the play. iwu possessions laier, uat goi on me scoreooara again, thanks to another Duke fumble. LINEBACKER JAMES Seawright, who recovered the miscue, said Carolina's defense shifted to a different linebacker alignment that confused Duke and eventually led to the fumble. Running back Raynard Brown swept right on the ensuing play for 17 yards and the score. Scott Hagler's extra point was good, and USC led at the half, 14-0. THE THIRD quarter began with USC's defense continuing to flex its muscles. Threatening to score, Duke's first possession ended when Gamecock defensive back Bryant Gilliard intercepted Drew Walston's pass on Carolina's 18-yard line. The quarter ended with unsuccessful scoring efforts from both teams, but USC's first possession of the fourth quarter produced the game's final score. RUNNING BACK Quinton Lewis rushed twice for 33 yards, and Mitchell connected a 31-yard pass to wide receiver Eric Poole for the touchdown. FITZGERALD DAVIS, who had six tackles including three sacks for minus 19 yards, said "geting excited is part of the game. "If you're not excited, you'll be about a second off the play," he said. "We had a mental edge this game. We had to be more intense and a lot sharper. Our timing was off (against The Citadel), but now we have it back."
