Sauier's 'Sia nr ~ - ., n more like sit By Fotrick Joan . , , . . t . Billy Squier's album, "Signs of Life," is k a dramatic deviation for the singer. 0 Not only has he dropped the guitar- f oriented rock, but he has also dropped d inav^iv, tuv vv/"|/iuuuvvi wi uia moi iiiivv albums. Squier has switched tp keyboard-oriented * rock and co-produced the album with Jim 1 Steinman, who favors synthesizers over guitars. c "SIGNS OF Life*' marks not only 1 Squier's change, but also his artistic demise. The 10 songs on this album are neither s memorable nor well-written. 1 Squier's change in style is evident with the ( album's first two songs. Keyboards are the 5 dominant sound in "All Night Long." His current hit. "Rock Me Tonite." is also dominated by keyboards, but it sounds more like a typical Squier hit. * Most of the songs do not sound like Squier, but some do. "Take a Look Behind c Ya" is a guitar-oriented song that sounds closest to his roots. ( "UAivjit ? :0 ? : ?i,:? F iiniii/ iTiu L/uwiia 13 a i uiiiiiwug number, but "Sweet Release" sounds too s much like "Lonely is the Night," one of his previous hits. c "Reach for the Sky," although keyboard- ' oriented, sounds like a Squier song. 5 However, the lyrics are flat cliches about > I winning against the odds and fulfilling dreams. Most of the songs on the album suffer from poor lyrical content. ^ Some of Squier's "new sound" songs are : good, although they are not typical of him. ' "Can't Get Next to You" has more of a soul . * beat than a rock sound. t 1 March of I - BIRTH DEFECTS FOUI B l"V" r*w*u UUI ... UtLIVtKY DAY SATURDAY & SUNDAY 1770 . use CAMPUS IA ST. 'V IVI II?UI rn mmm<9 vvni v???%? vv?? ounding. This song also suffers from a mudly percussion as do most of the other songs. The album's most significant song, is (Another) 1984" based on George Orwell's >ook. The song features a plethora of synhesizer effects. The wordy lyrics speak of a dying world, lominated by machinery, and by heartless eaders who have made themselves omnipoent and lost contact with their citizens. This song perfectly parallels Squier's new lound. His music is also dominated by nachinery. He has also lost contact with his >riginal musical roots, sound and ;ongwriting talent. PERHAPS SUCCESS has spoiled Billy iquier. His best albums were released before lis commercial success. His debut, "Tale of the Tape," and his :ommerical breakthrough, the brilliant 'Don't Say No," show an immense amount )f talent. He had many hit sons from ''Emotions in Motion," his third album, but his longwriting was not up to par. The reason Squier chose Jim Steinman to :o-produce his new album is clear. He's tryng to find a new direction in a career that ;eems to be plummetting. He has left a lot behind in the process. SQUIER'S NEW album, "Signs of Life," vill be a major disappointment for anyone vho buys it. Fans of his earlier albums will [>e alientated by his "new sound" and poor jongtoriting. ' "Signs of Life*' is the wrong title to use for his album. "Signs of Loss" would be better. Dimes ndation mm mnman s BAR.
