Second year Lady Gamecock golf Coach
Donna Noonan said she's optimistic and is
looking to improve over the spring season.
Last season's highlights included a thirdplace
finished at the Duke University tournament
and an impressive ninth-place finish at
the Women's Southern Intercollegiate
Championship where they defeated
nationally-ranked teams.
i This may be a yong team, made up of
freshmen and sophomores, but they will be
counted on to place high in tournaments.
NOONAN SAID sophomore Sandy Persinppr
nlaverl well this Glimmer finishino first
in one tournament and qualifying for ihe
U.S. Amateur tournament. Sophomore
Marianne Morris, has made great improvement
since last year, Noonan said. She said
she will depend on Morris for the one or two
spot on the team.
Junior Kelly Brannon qualified for the
U.S. Amateur tournament and will also be in
one of the top spots.
Noonan will depend as well on freshmen
newcomers. Liz Galbraith from Canada,

mons of Lake City.
NOONAN SAID her training techniques
will be the same as last year.
"there will be a few changes, but not
many," Noonan said. "Last year, being a
first-year coach, 1 learned things. For one,

earlier this fall, the girls will be training differently
from then until January."
Training officially started yesterday.
Noonan says the main emphasis this year will
be working on the team's short game and
course management.
"Most of the girls can hit the ball OK, but
need the experience of playing under pressure
and in situations that, when they get to the
tournaments, thev know how to react."
Noonan said.
FIVE TOURNAMENTS are scheduled
this fall and in January the team will be
travelling to Guadalajara, Mexico for the
Oklahoma State University/Guadalajara Invitational,
one of the big tournaments of the
year according to Noonan.
In Mexico, the Lady Gamecocks can expect
to face Tulsa, Stanford and Florida as
their toughest opponents.
Another tournament, the WSIC in Athens,
Ga., will be an important one. Coach
Noonan said she looks forward to this tournament
personally because she used to direct
it and the national championships there. This
is also the last tournament if the team does
not make it to the Nationals, but Noonan
says she is confident the team will be there.
In ihp nr?vt f#?vv wpplt Nnnnan will hr*
discussing personal goals with each player,
and these goals will be incorporated into her
team's goal of making it to the nation's top
20. "We have the ability, we just have to
work on it," Noonan said.
The team's first tournament will be Sept.
